We explore ideas from a woman's point of view. Think of us as the critical-thinking crossroads of literature, popular fiction, storytelling, history, feminism, anthropology, and pop culture. At the center of it all are these 2 questions: do we create stories, or do stories create us? Either way, since stories influence us, can we change stories that cause harm? • Such brilliant hosts!

I could listen to Sonja and Vanessa talk all day. They are brilliant but not at all pretentious. I always feel invited into the conversation, not kept from it. This is a wonderful podcast that I very much look forward to every week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

73. Falling & Bouncing Back: Gossip Girl with Cecily von Ziegesar / IWAW Author Series (S5E11 )
Q: What was it like juggling two Gossip Girl novels a year and launching the TV adaptation?
The author describes the whirlwind as the books largely completed before the TV adaptation, with writing bursts tapering off as the show began; the experience was dizzying but exciting, and the show's production opened new avenues for the characters beyond the books.
32. Melissa Fite Johnson on her collection, MIDLIFE ABECEDARIAN / IWAW Writer Series
Q: How does memory and honesty intersect in your work?
I've learned to value honesty even when it's uncomfortable; I use truth as a guiding principle, sometimes employing fictionalized or embellished moments to capture emotional truth and make readers feel the experience.
32. Melissa Fite Johnson on her collection, MIDLIFE ABECEDARIAN / IWAW Writer Series
Q: How did you come to use the Abecedarian form, and what did it unlock for you?
I started with free verse but found that the Abecedarian gave me a container that pushed me to be more creative, letting the form spark ideas I wouldn't have explored otherwise, and the constraint helped my language click into place.
32. Melissa Fite Johnson on her collection, MIDLIFE ABECEDARIAN / IWAW Writer Series
Q: Tell us about the title.
Midlife signals the stage of life the collection engages with, and Abecedarian is a formal constraint that structures the poetry, making it feel both approachable and deliberately crafted.
40. THE IRISH GOODBYE with Heather Aimee O'Neill / IWAW Author Series
Q: What was the inspiration behind choosing a three-sister dynamic for the novel?
The three sisters act as a complex, combustible triangle that explores family loyalty, conflict, and the different ways grief affects each member, while also connecting to a broader literary tradition of sibling-centered narratives.
