  • Awesome Show for WVU football fans

I started listening to this podcast last summer and was so impressed by the entertainment value and breakdown of each weeks opponent. The weekly breakdowns by Phil Steel is an awesome listen every week. This show has me craving to either hear perspectives on analysis of epic victory or heartbreaking defeat (ie Houston game)! Keep up the great work guys!

  • Sell outs

You guys are seeking out for access to NB and the WVU athletic department. I wish you’d keep it real. Neil Browns contract shouldn’t have been renegotiated because he got another year and even though he reduced his buyout I believe it’s a mathematical wash. 4.4 mil the last year at 75% buyout makes the entire deal about the same. You mentioned that you don’t recall any other coach giving up money for their assistant coaches. How about Bill Stewart? He reduced his salary to I believe 800k so his... more

  • Only Mountaineers I plug in my ears

As an Aussie fan of WVU, In The Gun have quickly become my first and only stop each week to get caught up on all things Mountaineer football. Hosts are great, striking an awesome balance of analysis, banter and storytelling, able to convey both the nuts and bolts of what went on schematically in the latest game as well as the passion and heart of WVU football. A five star listen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

new draft: 2025-08-29T21:02:10.840Z
Q: What is the big takeaway from the Texas vs Ohio State discussion?
The key takeaway is that Texas could challenge the prediction landscape if Arch Manning handles the road environment well, but Ohio State's home field and defense present a significant hurdle.
new draft: 2025-08-29T21:02:10.840Z
Q: Which game most influences WVU's outlook for the season according to the guests?
The West Virginia vs. Robert Morris opener is pivotal because of the heavy turnover at WVU and the opportunity to set a tone for the Rich Rodriguez era, contrasted with how control of the game management and defense could unfold.
new draft: 2025-08-29T21:02:10.840Z
Q: What makes Phil Steele's methodology reliable for predicting outcomes this season?
He combines long-form conversations with coaches, a thorough notes process, and cross-verification before locking in projections, which helps him produce more credible previews than a simple numbers-only approach.
Phil Steele Explains Picking WVU DEAD LAST in Big 12 Preseason Rankings
Q: Why did you pick West Virginia to finish last in the Big 12 this year?
Because WVU has a lot of turnover and a tougher schedule than most teams at the bottom; the combination of last-year's roster changes, players arriving after spring practice, and a demanding road slate makes the bottom-six projection reasonable, even if there's underlying talent.
Phil Steele PREDICTS West Virginia vs. Robert Morris
Q: Of those three high-profile coaching returns (Rich Rod, Scott Frost, Bill Belichick at North Carolina), which has the best chance to turn their program around the fastest?
Phil suggests North Carolina could have a strong season if the schedule allows; he believes Rich Rod is the more likely to drive WVU's turnaround at a faster pace than Frost at UCF or Belichick at UNC, given WVU's history and potential.
