  • Wonderful podcast

In Bed with the Elephant” by Adrian Harewood is one of the most thoughtful and intellectually engaging podcasts I’ve listened to in a long time. What makes this podcast stand out is its ability to explore complex political and historical issues with depth, nuance, and humanity. I especially appreciated the episodes discussing Israel, Palestine, and the history of the Israeli state, which offered perspectives and historical context that are often missing from mainstream media conversations.

  • Courageous Conversations

These are relevant, courageous, and important conversations for our current times. It offers insights on the societal chaos around us. Also, Harewood is clearly a veteran. He is skilled in guiding his guests down a particular path so that key issues are kept to the forefront. Yet, he manages to do so without intruding on his guests as they bring their stories to the public. Bravo!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Imagining Indigenous futures and healthier relations with the Canadian state w/ Niigaan Sinclair
Q: There has been criticism of reconciliation promises during the campaign and beyond; how do you respond to concerns that promises haven't fully materialized?
While there have been failures and imperfect implementation, the core point is that momentum exists when Indigenous voices are present in leadership roles, enabling policies that address concrete needs like water rights, housing, and resource sharing.
Imagining Indigenous futures and healthier relations with the Canadian state w/ Niigaan Sinclair
Q: Niigaan, speaking of the centre, your most recent book, why conceive a politics centered in Indigenous knowledge as a path for Canada?
The book argues Winnipeg and its watershed history illuminate a broader future where Indigenous rights and governance are at the center of national decision making, creating a healthier relationship with the land and with Canadians overall.
(Re)considering Ed Broadbent in the age of fascism, AI & genocide w/ Luke Savage
Q: What are some things that you think this current edition of the NDP could learn from Ed Broadbent?
Savage notes that Broadbent wore his ideology on his sleeve and remained principled while communicating in accessible terms, arguing for a clear social democratic vision that addresses everyday concerns and explains how public goods can liberate people from market constraints.
Why the U.S. always gets Iran wrong w/ Nader Hashemi
Q: When you heard and read what the president of the United States, Donald Trump, said, as an Iranian, as an academic, as someone who lives in Washington, DC, what was going through your mind?
I was struck by the idea that US foreign policy had effectively adopted the language and aims of genocide, which underscored how dangerous and destabilizing such rhetoric is; it reminded us that the US position in the region was deeply entangled with a historical pattern of coercive intervention, and I anticipated this would have severe consequences for regional dynamics and the Iranian public's trust in Western intentions.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General on human rights, freedom & justice w/ Agnès Callamard
Q: What role should Canada play in advancing the human rights project, given its leadership and recent political shifts?
Canada should sustain and strengthen its leadership on human rights, resist compromising on values for trade deals, and continue supporting a global rule-based order that protects human rights beyond its borders.
