  • McDonald’s and HSBC advertisers? Sort it out

In disbelief that at the top of the episode for leading environmentalist Philip Lymbery (Farmageddon, Dead Zones) there is a McDonalds advert for a sausage sandwich breakfast. What an insult. Awful to advertise that regardless of who the guest is but I actually thought it was some kind of joke on this episode

  • Hold guests to account more please. Challenge

Regularly listen to the podcast. Just had to grit my teeth listening to Anne Applebaum and her very one-sided views on autocracy, and the dangers of foreign countries meddling in the sovereignty of other countries.

On discussing the history of democracy in Latin America, there was the expected attack on Venezuela (Anne is let’s it be known she is close to the opposition) but what really irks me is that she mentions China, Russia and Iran, fair enough without ANY mention of the numerous interfer... more

  • Adverts

An opportunity to hear influential ‘global thinkers’ discuss deeply significant topics but - all credibility is lost when the discussions are interrupted by adverts for crypto currency and the gambling industry.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Neuroscientist Mark Solms - Was Freud Right?
Q: How should we balance inherited vulnerability and lived experience in mental health?
The guest emphasizes epigenetics as the key bridge, arguing that genes provide potentials while environments activate them; thus mental health results from gene–environment interactions rather than either factor alone.
Neuroscientist Mark Solms - Was Freud Right?
Q: Why was there such a rejection of Freud, and what changed in his reception?
The host and guest discuss a dichotomy: some scholars saw Freud as overly dogmatic, while others as a brilliant pioneer; over time, advances in neuroscience and psychology have validated aspects of Freud's ideas, especially about the unconscious and developmental drivers.
James Muldoon - Love Rewired in the Age of AI
Q: What are the biggest risks and how should we regulate this space?
Regulation should target harms like dependency, self-harm risks, privacy violations, and manipulative design, with a need for frameworks that hold companies accountable while allowing beneficial uses under guardrails, drawing on models from other consumer technologies.
James Muldoon - Love Rewired in the Age of AI
Q: Did you set out with an idea and then prove it, or did your mind alter and change as you went along and conducted your research and spoke to people?
I started skeptical about the phenomenon but found a diverse, global set of cases and narratives that challenged my initial assumptions, revealing varied motivations and outcomes across different cultures and contexts.
James Muldoon - Love Rewired in the Age of AI
Q: Can you set out in your words first, just the title gives away quite a lot, but the premise of this book?
The book explores people who form relationships with personalized AI—friendship, therapy, intimate companionship, and even connections to deceased loved ones—showing a broad spectrum of motivations and experiences, from light entertainment to deep dependence, and contrasting uplifting stories with dystopian ones.
