  • McDonald’s and HSBC advertisers? Sort it out

In disbelief that at the top of the episode for leading environmentalist Philip Lymbery (Farmageddon, Dead Zones) there is a McDonalds advert for a sausage sandwich breakfast. What an insult. Awful to advertise that regardless of who the guest is but I actually thought it was some kind of joke on this episode

  • Hold guests to account more please. Challenge

Regularly listen to the podcast. Just had to grit my teeth listening to Anne Applebaum and her very one-sided views on autocracy, and the dangers of foreign countries meddling in the sovereignty of other countries.

On discussing the history of democracy in Latin America, there was the expected attack on Venezuela (Anne is let’s it be known she is close to the opposition) but what really irks me is that she mentions China, Russia and Iran, fair enough without ANY mention of the numerous interfer... more

  • Adverts

An opportunity to hear influential ‘global thinkers’ discuss deeply significant topics but - all credibility is lost when the discussions are interrupted by adverts for crypto currency and the gambling industry.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Oren Harman - The Human History of Metamorphosis
Q: Oren Harman, what is metamorphosis, scientifically speaking?
Metamorphosis is dramatic post-embryonic development, a broad working definition that recognizes substantial change after embryonic development, while also acknowledging the fuzziness of what counts as 'dramatic' and who defines it.
Peter Jones - The Secret History of the Seven Deadly Sins
Q: And in your history, the Seven Deadly Sins become a therapeutic tool for priests to use in conversation with their congruence. Can you tell us a bit more about that?
Therapy becomes integrated into confession around the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215, where annual confession becomes compulsory. The sins then serve as a concrete template to guide conversations about personal problems and pathways to improvement, turning moral reflection into a practical, therapy-like process.
Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin — How to Harness the Power of Music
Q: What makes music so powerful for memory and emotion compared to other stimuli?
Music engages multiple brain systems and access points—tempo, pitch, melody, lyrics, and emotional associations—providing diverse routes to memory. Its emotional charge helps encode memories deeply, while the default mode network and rhythm can reset or regulate neural function, making music uniquely potent for memory and mood.
Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin — How to Harness the Power of Music
Q: Can you guide me through the journey of music from outside to inside us?
All sound starts with movement that disturbs air; this triggers mechanical and electrochemical events that send nerve impulses to the auditory cortex. The brain then interprets these signals as sound, extracting onsets, offsets, rhythm, pitch, timbre, and emotions, creating a rich, multi-access memory network for music.
Natalie Haynes and Robin Ince - The Myth of Medea, Reimagined
Q: Why do you think retellings of classical myths remain popular for modern readers?
Because these stories are malleable and reflect the times they're read in, allowing new interpretations that address contemporary gender, social, and political concerns.
