  • Afraid

Intelligence squared always seemed a great place for debate until the

    Israeli genocide started. Then silence.

  • Prostate cancer - Intelligence Halved

I listened to this 30 minute episode and know absolutely nothing more about prostate cancer than I did going in (which was very little). 30 minutes of vague generalities that could have applied to just about any disease or condition. You have three experts on, plus a moderator that presumably did some research - provide some actual details about the unique experiences of prostate cancer, symptoms, treatment, prognosis, typical course of the disease, etc.

Some episodes are getting weaker. None more so than having Michael Gove on the show.

  • Mediocre show

It used to be wonderful, now just invites mediocre people who try to sell their books.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Evening with Kae Tempest (Part One)
Q: What is it about fiction that has allowed you to tell this truth?
Tempest explains that building a world relies on listening to the characters and allowing their needs to guide the story, rather than forcing a preconceived form; the process is deeply tied to time, memory, and the life of the characters themselves.
Lena Dunham: Famesick, with Dolly Alderton (Part One)
Q: My first question for you is, thank you for inviting me to your slumber party. Can you describe what teenage Lena Dunham was like at a sleepover in great detail?
Dunham gives a vivid, humorous, and self-aware account of teenage sleepovers, including moments of lying, insecurity, and the social dynamics that shaped her early voice, followed by reflections on how those experiences inform her later work and persona.
What Will Trigger the Next World War? With Peter Apps
Q: Which arena is the most volatile right now and which could spark a wider war?
Ukraine remains volatile in Europe with ongoing conflict, while the Asia-Pacific region, particularly around Taiwan, is deemed the highest risk for a broader confrontation that could escalate if miscalculation occurs.
An Evening with Kae Tempest (Part Two)
Q: What books and records did you love and find comforting as a child, and do you revisit them?
Tempest discusses a lifelong immersion in reading and music, the way those forms fed imagination, and how fiction and lyricism became anchor points for her sense of self, with Hangover Square and Le Guin among the formative influences shaping her ongoing creative practice.
Demis Hassabis and Sebastian Mallaby on The Quest for Artificial General Intelligence (Part One)
Q: Why write a book about Demis Hassabis and why now?
Mallaby explains that AI is the most transformative technology of our era, and Hassabis is a uniquely influential figure whose life intertwines with big philosophical and technical questions about how AI should be developed and governed. The book aims to profile the person behind the breakthroughs and to reflect on the broader implications for society.
