The Cost of the Pivot: Leaving Corporate, Betting on Yourself, Self Trust, Growing Pains, Evolving & Rebranding, Mental Health Hacks, Building Resilience, & More | Les Alfred
Q: What is the pivot tax and why does it matter when rebranding?
The pivot tax describes the hidden costs of pivoting—identity loss, social pushback, financial dips, and the time needed to stabilize after a rebrand. Recognizing these costs helps people brace themselves, plan financially, and stay committed to their long-term vision.
FINDING NEUTRALITY: ACCEPTING THE DARK PARTS OF OURSELVES, MANAGING RUMINATION, INTELLECTUALIZING VS PROCESSING, REJECTING “GIRL BOSS” CULTURE, REDEFINING FEMININITY, & MORE WITH PAYTON SARTAIN
Q: What advice would you give to someone who feels stuck in darkness and doesn't know how to move forward?
Payton emphasizes regulation and processing over rumination, therapy, and building a support network. She suggests starting with small, practical steps like grounding routines, communicating needs in relationships, and recognizing that motivation can shift as you grow, including the possibility of redefining personal goals.
FINDING NEUTRALITY: ACCEPTING THE DARK PARTS OF OURSELVES, MANAGING RUMINATION, INTELLECTUALIZING VS PROCESSING, REJECTING “GIRL BOSS” CULTURE, REDEFINING FEMININITY, & MORE WITH PAYTON SARTAIN
Q: How did you get into creating content and sharing more than fashion/lifestyle?
She explains starting with a blog in college, moving into fashion PR, then transitioning to Instagram and, eventually, podcasting when blogging waned in popularity. Her motivation has always been to be seen and to help others feel seen, driven by a desire for authentic self-expression.

Q: When did you register depression, anxiety?
Payton describes a long, winding path with therapy, medication, and eventually a realization that depression and anxiety are symptoms of deeper issues. She notes that medication helped when she first tried it, but that ultimately she focused on learning to regulate and reframe thoughts, while recognizing that healing is ongoing and personal.
