  • Really bad episode on Body “Positivity”

“Besides the fact that it is difficult to feel free and passionate when you are thinking about how unattractive a part of you looks, it is also not much of a turn on for your partner. Generally, men do not find it sexy to hear you say, oh gosh, my butt is so flabby, or are my breast too droopy? Nor is it a turn on if you don't believe any compliments they give you.”

I’ve listened to a couple of episodes, but have decided not to listen to any more based on the above direct quote. I’m a hetero wo... more

  • Lack of Internalized misogyny coversation

I loved this podcast up until the 9/8/23 episode. The feedback to the mom with body issues left out a huge conversation about the internalized misogyny of the mommy & beauty industrial complexes. The advice to “put on some lingerie and just do it anyway until you want it more” was not it. Seriously considering unfollowing this pod bc of this issue.

  • Heteronormative

Heard this recommended on another show so I thought I’d try it. The first episode I d listened to (just picked the most recent) “Loving your body” was so heteronormative I couldn’t even finish. It was essentially “so you hate your body? That’s fine because Most Men want curves; Most Men are attracted to XYZ; you should listen to your husband when he tells you he’s still sexually attracted to you.” I’m cishet and it was too much for me to listen to. It didn’t help that the first ad break was “the... more

Oh, Sister! Oh, Brother! How to Cure Sibling Rivalry During the Holidays
Q: Dear Dr. Saltz, my sister and I have a pretty good relationship, except when during the holidays, she wants to do it big and elaborate and showy. She likes to wow my parents and the extended family. And actually, my parents do compliment her a lot as she pulls out all the stops. I love my sister, but this makes me feel bad as though I'm the underachiever, which really generally is not the case. This has been a heck of a year, and I'd just be happy to get together without a lot of extras and hoopla, without spending a lot of money and feeling by comparison with my parents that I'm not the good one or I'm not able in the holiday making department. I don't know if I can tell her this, if I'm being too touchy, and whether she will just be insulted and do it anyway. What do you think? How can I handle the situation so I don't end up feeling unhappy in the holiday?
Dr. Saltz acknowledges the pressure to perform and reframes the issue as a need for open, compassionate communication. She suggests identifying your own feelings, expressing them with 'I' statements to avoid blame, and proposing collaborative ways to share the holiday tasks. She emphasizes re-evaluating old roles, negotiating boundaries, and inviting your sister to participate in ways that feel meaningful to you both, which can reduce competition and preserve the relationship.
Insecure About How Your Body Looks? Why That Shouldn’t Inhibit Your Sex Life [Archives]
Q: What can I do to get my mojo back when I feel self-conscious about my body?
Stop the constant comparisons to magazines and models, practice positive self-talk, and actively reframe your perception by focusing on what you like about your body, then share with your partner to invite reassurance and adjust expectations. Try new things in bed and invite small, visible forms of intimacy to rebuild arousal.
The Brain-Body Connection and How It Affects Your Health Every Day [Archives]
Q: Could anxiety or depression actually cause cancer to return or worsen during treatment?
There is no evidence that anxiety or depression cause cancer or its recurrence. However, persistent anxiety and depression can worsen overall health, affect sleep, appetite, and adherence to treatment, and thus negatively impact quality of life and medical outcomes.
The Media is Full of Bad News—But It Doesn’t Have to Overwhelm You [Archives]
Q: How can I help with the Afghanistan coverage distress I am experiencing?
Recognize survivor's guilt as a normal reaction but distinguish empathy from personal responsibility; set boundaries to limit exposure, reframe thoughts more realistically, and channel feelings into constructive actions that help others without overwhelming yourself.
When You Can’t Stop Biting Your Nails Or Picking Your Skin [Archives]
Q: Is medication the ultimate solution for these disorders?
Medication alone is not the solution; it supports therapy by reducing symptoms so the behavioral techniques can work. The dose and choice of medication may vary, and sometimes higher doses or switching SSRIs is considered. The key is to use medication as part of a broader treatment plan that emphasizes habit reversal and coping strategies.
