  • Really bad episode on Body “Positivity”

“Besides the fact that it is difficult to feel free and passionate when you are thinking about how unattractive a part of you looks, it is also not much of a turn on for your partner. Generally, men do not find it sexy to hear you say, oh gosh, my butt is so flabby, or are my breast too droopy? Nor is it a turn on if you don't believe any compliments they give you.”

I’ve listened to a couple of episodes, but have decided not to listen to any more based on the above direct quote. I’m a hetero wo... more

  • Lack of Internalized misogyny coversation

I loved this podcast up until the 9/8/23 episode. The feedback to the mom with body issues left out a huge conversation about the internalized misogyny of the mommy & beauty industrial complexes. The advice to “put on some lingerie and just do it anyway until you want it more” was not it. Seriously considering unfollowing this pod bc of this issue.

  • Heteronormative

Heard this recommended on another show so I thought I’d try it. The first episode I d listened to (just picked the most recent) “Loving your body” was so heteronormative I couldn’t even finish. It was essentially “so you hate your body? That’s fine because Most Men want curves; Most Men are attracted to XYZ; you should listen to your husband when he tells you he’s still sexually attracted to you.” I’m cishet and it was too much for me to listen to. It didn’t help that the first ad break was “the... more

The Media is Full of Bad News—But It Doesn’t Have to Overwhelm You [Archives]
Q: How can I help with the Afghanistan coverage distress I am experiencing?
Recognize survivor's guilt as a normal reaction but distinguish empathy from personal responsibility; set boundaries to limit exposure, reframe thoughts more realistically, and channel feelings into constructive actions that help others without overwhelming yourself.
When You Can’t Stop Biting Your Nails Or Picking Your Skin [Archives]
Q: Is medication the ultimate solution for these disorders?
Medication alone is not the solution; it supports therapy by reducing symptoms so the behavioral techniques can work. The dose and choice of medication may vary, and sometimes higher doses or switching SSRIs is considered. The key is to use medication as part of a broader treatment plan that emphasizes habit reversal and coping strategies.
When You Can’t Stop Biting Your Nails Or Picking Your Skin [Archives]
Q: What can I do to stop these behaviors once and for all?
A three-step habit reversal approach is recommended: first become aware of when you perform the behavior, then learn and apply relaxation techniques to reduce stress, and finally use a competing response that is physically incompatible with the behavior to prevent acting on the urge. Daily, focused practice helps these new habits become automatic, and the therapy should be paired with appropriate medication if needed, with a plan to taper later if possible.
How to Deal with Money Anxieties [Archives]
Q: Dear Dr. Saltz, My husband and I both have pretty good jobs, and I have come from a person who was so constantly focused on having enough money to meet the moment to one that does have enough money to pay my bills, to have a home, have my kids in school, and do some nice things. You would think this would take me from being the always money worrying person I was to a calmer, more content version of myself. But no. I have recently found myself awakening during the night, feeling panicked that we don't have a nest egg, that we don't have savings in case there's an emergency, a car wreck, a medical illness. I realize these things may never happen, but I keep thinking, what if they do? And this nervousness is building over time, and it is now something I'm feeling worried about a lot of the day. I have started bugging my husband, who is saying we are okay, which actually is just making me feel more anxious. And this is a real anxiety problem; how can I tell, what can I do?
The anxiety often has a kernel of truth, so you need to assess actual danger while also recognizing that some worry can be amplification from anxiety. Start by creating a plan for a modest emergency fund, involve your partner in the process, and communicate your need for financial security as a joint goal rather than a personal fear. If worry persists and disrupts sleep or daily function, consider therapy or CBT, and possibly medication if appropriate.
When the Diagnosis is Cancer [Archives]
Q: What are the first steps to cope with anxiety right after the diagnosis?
Acknowledge the fear, allow others to help, engage in calm activities like breathing and light exercise, and seek professional help if anxiety is persistent or disabling.
