  • Everyone needs to hear this

I listen to every episode at least twice to truly digest the conversations. Digging deeply into the ‘why’s’ of marketing and the motivations that bring us to consumerism are my hobby horse as I’m healing my way through a shopping addiction and Dr. Einstein’s work has helped put so many words to some of my own ideas and thoughts.

    Must Listen (religiously 😜)

  • A podcast relevant to this moment

Loved Ep 1! This podcast is an interesting space to learn about so much of the why and how of what life in the U.S. (and the world) is like. Marketing, capitalism, cults, religion, community — we *all* need to get deeper into these subjects to understand and resist the global politic currently making human life on this planet so precarious. Looking forward to Ep 2!

The ultimate commercial cult
Q: Can you explain what multi-level marketing really is beyond the common media narrative?
MLMs are not just a sales model; they're an endless recruitment scheme that uses product allure to disguise a debt-funded, high-pressure network where most people lose money, while those at the top profit from the funnel.
What is a cult?
Q: What practical tool can listeners use to navigate a world where belief and marketing are intertwined?
Perform a system audit to understand which systems and actors shape attention and spending, and consider joining or supporting collective actions that reframe value in ways that prioritize shared human flourishing.
What is a cult?
Q: What is commodified religion, and how do modern icons like Oprah and Taylor Swift fit into this idea?
Commodified religion describes how money, celebrity, and consumer goods become integral to spiritual life, turning figures like Oprah or Swift into ritual-like centers of meaning and social belonging within a capitalist framework.
What is a cult?
Q: Why is the term cult controversial in academic and public discourse, and how should we approach it?
The term cult is historically loaded and can stigmatize real communities; scholars advocate using precise, contextual language about group dynamics, beliefs, and practices while recognizing harms when they occur.
What is a cult?
Q: Can you define religion in a way that captures its complexity beyond traditional labels?
Religion can be framed as a system of worship that binds people through rituals, practices, and beliefs, with room for secular and spiritual forms that fulfill similar social needs for meaning and belonging.
