Think history is boring? That’s because you’ve only ever heard the fake version.

On History Rage, professional historians come in swinging — smashing the myths, clichés, and half-truths that keep getting recycled in classrooms, documentaries, and TikToks. Vikings with horned helmets? Nope. Britain standing alone in 1940? Wrong. Medieval people never bathed? Rubbish.

  • As a semi professional podcast listener

There are many best things about History Rage. There is the wide variety of guests not just historians but authors, journalists, PHD candidates and fellow podcasters all with their own slant on discussing history. Some are big hitters like James Holland or Tracey Borman but could just as easily be someone discussing a very niche topic that you never knew could be so interesting. Armour for example is weirdly fascinating. But then so is world wars, Tudors, anti Tudors, Cold War, ancient pathways ... more

  • An okay show

A nice idea, but depends on the guests and held back by one of the hosts not being very good. He’s a bit cringe, tries too hard to be funny and interrupts the guests. This often results in awkward pauses, which isn’t great to listen too

  • Excellent history podcast with an unusual approach

Great podcast with loads of expert speakers ‘raging’ about false historical myths and trying to correct the record.

A real smorgasbord of topics from across history. Listen to get educated about some often uncomfortable events.

Keep up the great work Paul.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

303. Berlin was not blockaded in 1948 with Joseph Pearson
Q: How did the media frame the Airlift, and what were the implications for public perception?
The media framed the Airlift as a humanitarian and civilizational victory while omitting or soft-pedaling the coercive pressure and disinformation used; this helped catalyze public support in the West but also created a simplified, heroic narrative that belies the underlying geopolitical tensions.
303. Berlin was not blockaded in 1948 with Joseph Pearson
Q: So what is the one thing you wish people would stop believing about Berlin during the airlift?
That Berlin was entirely blockaded; in reality, land and rail access were restricted and the city relied heavily on an airlift, while some ordinary cross-border movement still occurred, changing the popular narrative about the event.
301. Operation Paperclip was a necessary evil with Guy Walters
Q: Did the Soviets get any secrets from the Blisna/Blizna testing ground?
According to Walters, the Soviets would have learned something, but not a great deal, as much of the work and testing remained behind, and the Germans stripped technology during retreat; thus the direct transfer of comprehensive knowledge was limited.
296. Stop Saying Roman Slavery Wasn’t That Bad with Emma Southon
Q: Could people sell themselves into slavery?
There is some late-imperial evidence suggesting it became legal to sell oneself into slavery in the later empire, but there is little to no evidence of this occurring in the Republic or early empire; most people who sold themselves into slavery would do so only under specific legal or tax contexts.
296. Stop Saying Roman Slavery Wasn’t That Bad with Emma Southon
Q: What percentage of Rome's population was slaves?
The consensus is that about a third of people were enslaved, with estimates ranging roughly from 25% to 35%, though exact figures are uncertain due to imperfect records.
