Think history is boring? That’s because you’ve only ever heard the fake version.

On History Rage, professional historians come in swinging — smashing the myths, clichés, and half-truths that keep getting recycled in classrooms, documentaries, and TikToks. Vikings with horned helmets? Nope. Britain standing alone in 1940? Wrong. Medieval people never bathed? Rubbish.

  • As a semi professional podcast listener

There are many best things about History Rage. There is the wide variety of guests not just historians but authors, journalists, PHD candidates and fellow podcasters all with their own slant on discussing history. Some are big hitters like James Holland or Tracey Borman but could just as easily be someone discussing a very niche topic that you never knew could be so interesting. Armour for example is weirdly fascinating. But then so is world wars, Tudors, anti Tudors, Cold War, ancient pathways ... more

  • An okay show

A nice idea, but depends on the guests and held back by one of the hosts not being very good. He’s a bit cringe, tries too hard to be funny and interrupts the guests. This often results in awkward pauses, which isn’t great to listen too

  • Excellent history podcast with an unusual approach

Great podcast with loads of expert speakers ‘raging’ about false historical myths and trying to correct the record.

A real smorgasbord of topics from across history. Listen to get educated about some often uncomfortable events.

Keep up the great work Paul.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

280. Stop Calling Renaissance Doctors Stupid with Alanna Skuse
Q: What could modern medicine still learn from the Renaissance, and what have we learned that's still relevant today?
Lifestyle factors and holistic care were foundational then and remain relevant; the era also taught the importance of questioning established authorities and the cautious exploration of new therapies, even when they seem strange at first. It shows that curiosity and rigorous observation drive progress.
280. Stop Calling Renaissance Doctors Stupid with Alanna Skuse
Q: What are some successes and failures in Renaissance medicine that surprised you, and what do they reveal about the era?
There were remarkable breakthroughs in surgery and prosthetics, and a shift toward recognizing the value of observation and anatomy, as seen with Vesalius. But there were also extraordinary, sometimes grotesque, remedies and missteps, underscoring a vibrant but messy pathway to modern medicine.
283. Cleopatra was NOT a Sex Obsessed Femme Fatale with Lucy Hughes-Hallett | Gloucester History Festival Special #2
Q: Why do myths around Cleopatra persist so strongly?
Because Cleopatra's image touches on universal themes—power, gender, foreignness, and threat to Roman authority—allowing successive cultures to reuse and remix her story for their own agendas.
283. Cleopatra was NOT a Sex Obsessed Femme Fatale with Lucy Hughes-Hallett | Gloucester History Festival Special #2
Q: How has the portrayal of Cleopatra changed across history?
It shifted from a political and dynastic actor to an erotic emblem in Roman and later European storytelling, with later periods using her image to critique or reflect contemporary politics and gender norms.
283. Cleopatra was NOT a Sex Obsessed Femme Fatale with Lucy Hughes-Hallett | Gloucester History Festival Special #2
Q: What is the most important thing people should take away about Cleopatra beyond the love story?
She was a capable and effective ruler who restored Egypt's economy and used political alliances to advance her state, not merely a romantic figure.
