  • So Fun! ⭐️

A truly delightful listen. While it may not always go as deep as I would prefer on each subject, the banter and queer joy it radiates are enchanting for educated and casual listeners alike.

  • The Education We All Need

Sebastian does an amazing job facilitating interviews and helping to impart information not shared in typical schooling. Queer history/herstory belongs to all of us and this is a fun, enlightening way to approach it.

  • Hysterically historical, homos

I found this podcast based on a recommendation from another gay-focused historical podcast, Bad Gays. This podcast is delightful, historically instructive without being pedantic, well researched, and fabulously foul mouthed when necessary (and when is it not, really?). I’m listening chronologically so I’m speaking from the distant past, but so far every episode has been funny, irreverent, and enlightening (I was thrilled to learn about the Chinese rabbit god who cares for the gays). The host has... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

FEED DROP: Spirits Podcast – Jewish Lesbian Vampires
Q: What motivated you to approach queer Jewish vampires in your own work, and how do you navigate those tropes in a way that honors history while pushing forward?
I wanted to acknowledge the problematic roots while recasting those figures as sources of agency, community, and warmth, showing that queerness and Jewish identity can enrich the horror genre rather than restrict it, and that found families can be as powerful as bloodlines.
FEED DROP: Spirits Podcast – Jewish Lesbian Vampires
Q: Could you walk us through the origins of the anti-Semitic tropes in Dracula and how you see them in the text today?
Dracula reflects the era's anxieties about Jewish identity and otherness; while not maliciously intended, these depictions became a lens for examining power, fear, and societal prejudice, and they influenced later vampire literature in ways that can be critiqued and reinterpreted for more nuanced representation.
Evil Queens: The Queer History of Disney (feat. Sean Griffin)
Q: Who was Walt Disney and how did he get into animation?
Walt Disney was a working-class Midwesterner with a humble upbringing who eventually broke into animation, driven by his interest in drawing and influenced by the expanding silent film animation industry.
Evil Queens: The Queer History of Disney (feat. Sean Griffin)
Q: What was difficult about writing the Disney book and what was the mood at the time?
Sean mentioned it was challenging due to some resistance from academia, but it ultimately became a fitting dissertation topic after observing a strong queer audience connection during Disney screenings.
Born Again Queer: A History of Gay Evangelicals (feat. William Stell)
Q: What do you mean by evangelical homophobia must always be born again?
It refers to the idea that there are always people challenging homophobic interpretations within the evangelical community, forcing leaders to defend their positions and exposing the vulnerabilities of those defenses.
