The most entertaining and enraging stories from 'Classical' mythology (and, often, ancient history of the wider Mediterranean!) told casually, contemporarily, and (more often than not) sarcastically. The world of Greek mythology and the history of the wider ancient Mediterranean is full of wonder, horror, and utter hilarity. These myths and stories are timeless for a reason, they're just as releva... more

  • Can you just talk about history?

Like sources, quotes, direct discussions on the topic. The constant digressions, side conversations, and commentary is often disconnected. Was really hoping to find a good history podcast with just women.

  • Good content

I’ve been holding off on writing a review because I wasn’t sure how I felt about the podcast. I love Greek mythology but do not want to buy dozens of books and read it myself. I enjoy the way Liv tells the stories and she is good at it. I could do without the sarcastic comments every single time a woman is mistreated, but she’s not wrong with them. It’s just a little annoying. However, despite my mixed feelings about these comments, Liv is good at telling these stories. And her cat, whose name I... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Helen, the King Maker; Lucifer the Morningstar; Enyo, the Bloody... A New Years Q&A
Q: How do you feel about the ethylene gas theory related to ancient oracles?
Liv finds the ethylene gas theory interesting but expresses skepticism about its validity for ancient prophecies, suggesting that the site of Delphi and its connection to various environmental factors likely played a larger role than simply the gas.
Helen, the King Maker; Lucifer the Morningstar; Enyo, the Bloody... A New Years Q&A
Q: Can you provide travel tips for a young person solo traveling to Greece?
Liv does not provide specific travel tips but responds enthusiastically to the listener's excitement and gratitude for the podcast, emphasizing the importance of understanding ancient cultures and their impacts today.
Helen, the King Maker; Lucifer the Morningstar; Enyo, the Bloody... A New Years Q&A
Q: Could you talk about Enyo, the goddess of war and bloodshed?
Liv explains Enyo is more of a concept than a character in myths, embodying the violence of war distinct from Ares, who represents war more broadly. She notes the Greeks conceptualized her differently than the Romans did with their goddess of war, Belona.
Helen, the King Maker; Lucifer the Morningstar; Enyo, the Bloody... A New Years Q&A
Q: From what I remember from your podcast retellings and the original source, Helen is depicted as being able to choose her spouse. My question is, is there any sourcing that dives into why she chose Menelaus of all her suitors?
Liv discusses that most of the sourcing we have regarding Helen's choice comes from much later texts, and although it's often assumed she made the choice herself, it seems more plausible her father had significant influence on her marriage decisions, suggesting a complex lineage and kingship tradition.
RE-AIR: Conversations: Dragons! Witches! Werewolves! The Ancient Supernatural w/ Daniel Ogden
Q: What distinctions do you see between Greek and Roman perceptions of witches?
Greek witches tend to embody complexity and sometimes more positive traits, whereas Roman depictions often portray them as bloodthirsty and Gothic figures.
