The most entertaining and enraging stories from 'Classical' mythology (and, often, ancient history of the wider Mediterranean!) told casually, contemporarily, and (more often than not) sarcastically. The world of Greek mythology and the history of the wider ancient Mediterranean is full of wonder, horror, and utter hilarity. These myths and stories are timeless for a reason, they're just as releva... more

  • The BEST way to learn myths

I came across this podcast back during the pandemic and I was desperate for something new. I had never gotten into podcasts before, but wanted something to feel like a conversation to remind me what normal times were like. Then this Olympus sent podcast comes to my attention. It had the conversation vibe I wanted. Liv is fun, funny, and unashamedly a nerd in the best way. AND I finally found a way to learn all about a myth or character in one location rather than a bunch of different books. Liv ... more

  • What’s with all the modern political commentary?

When I am listening to a mythological or historical podcast, I am not there for contemporary politics or the host’s views on such. I follow political and news podcasts for that. So, I have to unfollow this show, again, as I tried to give it a second chance. I give it three stars, because otherwise it’s pretty good.

  • Love this stuff!

Always loved the Greek myths, so much fun listening to them again with a more … modern take on them! And yeah, hilarious at the incongruous antics they got up to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

RE-AIR: Why Did Clytemnestra Kill Cassandra, Another Q&A
Q: Why does Clytemnestra kill Cassandra?
The host explains that the question is deeply dependent on which source one trusts; the Odyssey gives a fleeting mention that can be interpreted in multiple ways, while Aeschylus' Agamemnon adapts the tale for dramatic effect. Because the sources are centuries apart and largely male-produced, a definitive, modern explanation is elusive, and the reasons are likely a mix of jealousy, rage, and political context rather than a single clear motive.
Conversations: It's All Greek to Me! Ancient History 101 w/ Alexandra Sills
Q: Why is you bringing in early-career researchers important to the show?
Because fresh perspectives and new research can challenge established narratives and keep the conversations vibrant and inclusive, not just driven by established names.
Conversations: It's All Greek to Me! Ancient History 101 w/ Alexandra Sills
Q: Would you tell listeners a bit about Ancient History 101 and what makes it different?
It's a back-to-basics approach that invites a wide range of experts to break down the context, biography, and motivations behind ancient texts and events, making the material accessible without sacrificing scholarly nuance.
Ancient History 101 by Alexandra Sills, a Memory Collective Podcast
Q: What time does the Hellenica cover and how should a reader approach reading Xenophon in relation to Thucydides?
Rees explains that Hellenica picks up where Thucydides left off, and suggests reading Thucydides first, then continuing with Hellenica to get a fuller sense of the narrative, while recognizing Xenophon's unique perspective.
Ancient History 101 by Alexandra Sills, a Memory Collective Podcast
Q: Would you introduce yourself for our listeners who may not know you?
Dr. Owen Rees introduces himself as an ancient historian and lecturer at Birmingham Newman University, and then proceeds to discuss Xenophon's role as both historian and philosopher.
