Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dur e Aziz Amna on writing a story of womanhood and ambition in Pakistan: Southasia Review of Books podcast #37
Q: How did you approach portraying these varied female experiences and how did they shape Tara's own sense of self and the way she navigates these things like ambition and social expectation?
I aimed to explore Tara's psyche and realize her internalized misogyny, showing both her ambition and her struggle with the fears of slipping back into her previous life.
Dur e Aziz Amna on writing a story of womanhood and ambition in Pakistan: Southasia Review of Books podcast #37
Q: Could you talk a little bit about why Tara identifies with the man rather than the woman in these reveries and how you see them as perhaps a way to explore these dynamics of power and gender?
Tara's identification with the male figures in her daydreams reflects her understanding of society's gaze and the limitations placed upon women by their roles within it.
Dur e Aziz Amna on writing a story of womanhood and ambition in Pakistan: Southasia Review of Books podcast #37
Q: How did you approach balancing Tara's personal story with this larger context of early 2000s Pakistan?
I wanted to merge the personal with political without overshadowing Tara's emotional journey; the national events shape her life intimately yet must not eclipse her agency.
Dur e Aziz Amna on writing a story of womanhood and ambition in Pakistan: Southasia Review of Books podcast #37
Q: Could you talk about how that student story and this larger tale of the provincial migrant inspired and shaped your novel?
Tara's story is an exploration of the desire to leave and the baggage that one carries into their new life. Her hunger for freedom is complicated by the past and the recognition of how society treats women.
Dur e Aziz Amna on writing a story of womanhood and ambition in Pakistan: Southasia Review of Books podcast #37
Q: What draws you to these stories of women in transit and to characters whose ambitions are shaped and shadowed by the places they come from?
I think I say that the difference between the two of them is that while Hira is, she wants to leave, but once she's left, she's very reluctant to fully understand herself as a person who has left.
