  • This podcast is a precis of one of the most disgustingly 'woke' shows on Irish radio thes days (and believe me there's a lot of competition in that area unfortunately).

The other week I heard one of their TV reviewers complaining about a new American show aimed primarily at LGB teens.

He said he was disappointed that the depictions on screen of the two teenaged gays only showed them kissing, and that he would have preferred to see them (and I quote) 'explore each other' more on screen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Have movies lost the art of suspense?
Q: Has streaming and double screening got anything to do with it?
Yes, the format and pace of modern releases require different rhythms; when audiences skim or multitask, only the most immediately gripping, fast-paced suspense tends to land, making long, intricate suspense sequences harder to justify.
Have movies lost the art of suspense?
Q: Is it a skill that they've lost or a skill that they've abandoned?
Robey suggests it's both: some filmmakers moved away from tight suspense as they pursue longer, more prestigious projects, while the industry and streaming models discourage compact, high-tension storytelling in favor of broader, global appeal.
Tralee student to be first of non-Chinese descent to do Mandarin Leaving Cert
Q: How important is immersion in learning Mandarin, based on your Shanghai experience?
Immersion helped me move from knowing some basics to actively using Mandarin in real-life situations like restaurants and with my teacher, which accelerated my fluency.
Tralee student to be first of non-Chinese descent to do Mandarin Leaving Cert
Q: What makes Mandarin challenging for learners coming from European languages?
The lack of an alphabet, the complexity of characters, and the tonal nature of the language, where tones can completely change meanings, are the main hurdles, though the grammar itself is relatively straightforward in some respects.
Tralee student to be first of non-Chinese descent to do Mandarin Leaving Cert
Q: When did you first start studying Mandarin and what drew you to it?
I started as a short course alongside history, and I was drawn by the language, its culture, and the promise of a cultural immersion trip to Shanghai that summer which ignited a serious interest.
