  • Arrogant Audiofiles

They seem to ask for opinions and then make you feel stupid about your response. I felt bad for Dennis Burger. Seems like if you don’t have $100,000 in speakers you should sit down and shut up, because you “don’t know how to listen”.

  • Avg so far with possibilities

I feel like the show is rushed. A lot of good questions are posed but like in the 2nd show, they’re answered once by the guest and they go onto the next question. I feel like any one of those questions could be a topic for a longer discussion where the guest as well as all the hosts could chime in on. Maybe it would be better if a few of those questions were selected as topics and have a group discussion on each with everyone contributing. Also, I feel the main host is trying to be too fast ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Hi-Fi Five Episode 29: Field Coil Loudspeakers
Q: Question number eight, if you had measurements objectivist on the show, what objective measurement demonstrates field coil superiority?
Hysteresis loops and flux behavior are cited as key indicators; basic measurements like efficiency and impulse response may show differences, but hysteresis remains a signature discriminator between field coils and permanent magnets.
The Hi-Fi Five Episode 29: Field Coil Loudspeakers
Q: Question number seven, can traditional manufacturers move to field coils?
All speakers could theoretically benefit from field coils, but large blue-chip brands face economic and logistical barriers; full field coil adoption is unlikely except perhaps for specific drivers in high-end models; many speakers would require redesigns to accommodate the new magnetic architecture.
The Hi-Fi Five Episode 29: Field Coil Loudspeakers
Q: Question number six, is there any application where field coils are not the right answer?
Most guests agree permanent magnets can be the practical choice for mainstream production due to manufacturability, cost, and reliability, though field coils can offer superior sonic characteristics in boutique, artful designs given proper engineering.
The Hi-Fi Five Episode 29: Field Coil Loudspeakers
Q: Question number five, how does the sound change as you change the power supply voltage?
Raising voltage tightens the sound and increases precision and windowing of the image, while lowering voltage yields a warmer, more relaxed sound with a broader, softer presentation; the effect is a trade-off between clarity and perceived warmth.
The Hi-Fi Five Episode 29: Field Coil Loudspeakers
Q: Question number four, does the type of power supply affect the sound?
Power supply design is critical; the regulator quality, voltage, and stability influence field strength and thus sound, with tube vs solid-state choices debated but generally secondary to overall circuit design and consistency.
