I’ve been looking for a podcast focusing on the care and maintenance of the built heritage landscape for a long time, this podcast has finally met the brief! Great to hear informed and engaging interviews with heritage professionals and craftsmen, looking forward to more.

Would be very interesting to perhaps have the show focus on specific buildings or interventions and analyse approaches taken and outcomes.

[HBP#35] - Mariachiara Faliva - Seeing Buildings Beyond the Facade
Q: How does your team differentiate from a general building surveyor, and what unique capabilities do you bring to investigations?
We have in-house laboratories and deep expertise in concrete, geology, and chemistry, allowing us to perform more specialized testing and interpretation, and to translate results directly into actionable design recommendations for heritage façades.
[HBP#35] - Mariachiara Faliva - Seeing Buildings Beyond the Facade
Q: Could you take us through the process of surveying a building and producing a report from initial site visits to laboratory analysis?
Start with a half-day site visit to understand the environment, windows, facade type, and available documents. Then perform targeted openings and sampling, instruct the lab analyses specifically to understand the mechanisms behind failures, and compare good versus bad areas to reveal root causes and material incompatibilities.
[HBP#25] - Ross Balharry - Traditional Log Cabins: Building for Sustainable Living
Q: How do SAPS energy calculations affect your builds and decisions on insulation?
SAPS calculations push for high insulation efficiency, often favoring modern materials; Ross argues for preserving timber aesthetics and exploring lifecycle carbon, calling for flexible approaches and better data before standard changes.
[HBP#25] - Ross Balharry - Traditional Log Cabins: Building for Sustainable Living
Q: What were the biggest early challenges in turning craft into a business?
The main challenges were balancing craftsmanship with commercial viability, funding the first workshop, and managing labor — especially finding and training skilled staff who share the craft ethos.
[HBP#25] - Ross Balharry - Traditional Log Cabins: Building for Sustainable Living
Q: How did you get started in this field and what sparked Bedrock Buildings?
Ross recounts a childhood passion for outdoor building, a formative carpentry experience on a neighbour's carport, and a decision to pursue formal training before turning to hands-on timber work, ultimately forming Bedrock Buildings to pursue round timber and log-style construction.
