  • Appreciate a different perspective

I am grateful for the ability to hear the AAP’s thoughts on various topics. Not a fan of the phrase “pregnant people”… when I’m looking for information regarding health I’m looking for facts.

It was a little sketchy to hear a rsv add in the middle of the vaccine episode but I understand because the major vaccine companies do sponsor the AAP.

I appreciate their nonjudgmental approach and their encouragement to reach out to my pediatrician and not fear fact.

I will keep listening but prefer ... more

  • The frequency of the phrase "as a mom" and the focus on moms is jarring. Let's try to involve fathers in the learning process for child care, so that as a society everyone feels included, and therefore expected to participate.

  • Confusion

I enjoyed this podcast until the episode about educating about puberty, which is so very important. The host was talking about girls and menstruation, but then changed the verbiage to people who have a menstrual cycle. I can no longer trust this podcast to give me biologically accurate information if the host cannot differentiate which sex has a menstrual cycle.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness: What to Know Before the First Day – Ep. 74
Q: What should parents look for in a preschool to support readiness?
Parents should assess whether the program supports social-emotional development, opportunities for unstructured play, and gradual transition practices, including how the school handles separation and individual needs, such as toilet training and language exposure.
Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness: What to Know Before the First Day – Ep. 74
Q: What are the pros and cons of redshirting a child, and when does it make sense?
Redshirting can provide early academic and physical maturity advantages, but benefits often diminish by later grades and may introduce social mismatches. The best approach is a careful, family-by-family assessment with consideration of the child's temperament and readiness.
Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness: What to Know Before the First Day – Ep. 74
Q: Should all children be held back a year if they have a late summer birthday and could start kindergarten on time?
No; there needs to be nuance. Kids vary, and data show mixed benefits of delaying entry. The decision should consider the individual child's academic and social-emotional readiness and long-term implications.
How Much Sleep Do Teens Really Need? Expert Advice for Parents – Ep. 73
Q: When should a parent worry that the sleep issues are more than just typical teen sleep habits?
If it takes longer than 45 minutes to fall asleep, or if they're getting up multiple times throughout the night and can't fall back asleep, it should be discussed with a pediatrician.
How Much Sleep Do Teens Really Need? Expert Advice for Parents – Ep. 73
Q: What actually is going on with teen circadian rhythms during puberty?
Teens experience a shift in their circadian rhythm, making them not tired early in the evening and needing to sleep later.
