Growing up half Lao in majority-white Utah was so isolating and after my dad, who was a refugee from Laos during the Secret War, passed away due to a long-term illness he contracted in the camps turned into cancer, I felt even more disconnected from my Lao side and a large part of myself was lost for many years.
