  • Rita is a true healer

Growing up half Lao in majority-white Utah was so isolating and after my dad, who was a refugee from Laos during the Secret War, passed away due to a long-term illness he contracted in the camps turned into cancer, I felt even more disconnected from my Lao side and a large part of myself was lost for many years. This podcast has given me an opportunity to reconnect with that side, explore what it means to be Lao-American in today’s society, and has provided such an powerful reminder that we have... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E48: Catzie Vilayphonh on Arts as Resistance & LAOS in the House
Q: What advice would you give to a fellow organizer who wants to start something from scratch?
You need to give yourself a reality check; don't think that the community needs you. You need the community.
E48: Catzie Vilayphonh on Arts as Resistance & LAOS in the House
Q: What are your thoughts about what has taken place 50 years after the secret civil war in Laos?
There's a part of me that is like, 50 years is still fresh enough to think about the trauma of war, but I wonder how many years it will be until people are like, can we stop talking about the war?
E45: Tina Meetran on Eldest Daughterhood & Finding Out Family's Threat of Deportation at 16yo
Q: What mental health advice would you give to fellow Lao diaspora community members who are navigating their own healing journey?
Spend the money on the thing that you feel like feels silly, because I think that there are opportunities like your retreat, for example, or other retreats, or experiences, or educational opportunities that people say no to, because it's like, yeah, like, here's this five-day retreat for $3,000. More times than not, it becomes the thing that you needed.
E44: How to Pronounce Knife Book Talk w/Souvankham Thammavongsa (HOL Retreat March 2024)
Q: Have your parents read your story?
Souvankham shares that her dad has read some stories, and her mom found out about her book through a review someone showed her at work, highlighting a prideful moment for them as a family.
E44: How to Pronounce Knife Book Talk w/Souvankham Thammavongsa (HOL Retreat March 2024)
Q: Was it yourself who inspired you to have a different perspective than that common narrative of coming up in a small town and hating yourself?
Souvankham mentions that as an author, you can feel pressured to write familiar stories to get published, but she emphasizes the importance of telling her truth, reflecting her unique experiences and using humor as a way to connect with her audience's humanity.
