  • Open House

I love all of your podcasts! You are so generous, kind, and supportive. You obviously love your students and created a welcoming, safe environment while using tons of Spanish. I used your ideas for Open House tonight and it went so well!!! We also had only 7 min. The format really shows them the importance of being comprehensible, but also the role of the students. Thank you so much!

  • Claudia es fenomenal

I’m writing a review just to respond to the pompous arrogant person who said Claudia’s English is difficult to understand. Claudia is perfectly intelligible, her Colombian accent is pleasant and her transmission of knowledge is superb. Whoever wrote that review needs to realize that there is no correct accent in English. Even native speakers of English have accents. If you have a problem with someone’s accent that sounds like a you problem. I really appreciate all of Claudia’s knowledge and reso... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 196: Two Myths About Second Language Acquisition with Dr. Bill VanPatten
Q: What does a classroom look like when you shift from traditional instructional methods to comprehensible-input–based methods?
A CI-based classroom emphasizes rich, meaningful input and opportunities for interaction, with a hybrid structure that separates explicit content from CI units, uses stories and tasks for acquisition, and measures progress by what students can do and understand rather than by grammar drills.
Episode 196: Two Myths About Second Language Acquisition with Dr. Bill VanPatten
Q: Can you tell us about the two myths and why they matter for teachers today?
The first myth is that learners internalize fixed rules and patterns; in reality, rules aren't the primary driver—input and interaction shape language through a mental acorn-like process. The second myth is that children and adults learn language in fundamentally different ways; evidence shows similar underlying processes, with differences largely in external factors like motivation and opportunities for input.
Episode 179: How to Tell Stories So Students Actually Listen: What the Brain Says About Engagement with Erica Peplinski-Burge
Q: What brain mechanisms are most relevant to storytelling in language learning, and how can teachers leverage them?
She explains the competition between the mentalizing system and the prefrontal cortex, with mentalizing often leading to better retention when stories are used to connect with listeners' experiences.
Episode 179: How to Tell Stories So Students Actually Listen: What the Brain Says About Engagement with Erica Peplinski-Burge
Q: Tell us a little about you and what you've been focusing on lately.
Erica discusses her 18 years in the classroom, awards received, and a recent project on persona misteriosa and brain-based storytelling strategies to boost engagement.
Episode 181: 7 Steps to a Language-Rich, Interactive World Language Classroom with Sally Barnes
Q: What surprised you when you first implemented Step Four, total response signals?
I was surprised at how many previously passive students began participating once the signals were used consistently. The approach provided a low-stress way for every student to show understanding, created quick checks for comprehension, and helped re-engage students who were hesitant or anxious about speaking.
