  • Fascinating topics & real science

This is so necessary these days. I started following Eric Topol when Covid started and I am so glad I did. The information he freely shared with the public probably saved my life (I am still a novid here at the end of 2025) and today’s episode with Dr. Gunter couldn’t have come at a better time. I have been fighting for MHT for more than a year now & hot flashes are currently killing me. Now I can take some of this information in to my next appointment. Thank you both!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Roxanne Khamsi: We Are All Genetic Mosaics
Q: What are promolytics and how might they impact cancer treatment?
Promolytics are proposed approaches to identify promoter mutations that drive cancer development, enabling early intervention before a tumor forms and shifting treatment from killing cells to guiding their evolutionary dynamics to prevent cancer.
Roxanne Khamsi: We Are All Genetic Mosaics
Q: What role does single-cell sequencing play in diagnosing conditions like long QT syndrome?
Single-cell sequencing allows clinicians to detect mutations present in only a subset of cells, overturning assumptions that diseases are purely inherited; it showed that a child could have a sporadic mutation in heart tissue rather than a germline mutation.
Roxanne Khamsi: We Are All Genetic Mosaics
Q: How do somatic mutations change our understanding of health and disease?
Somatic mutations, which occur in body cells after conception, create a mosaic of genetic variation within the same individual. This means that not all cells carry the same genome, influencing disease risk, progression, and response to treatment in ways we previously attributed to inherited genetics alone.
Sebastian Mallaby: The Infinity Machine
Q: How did Hassabis balance scientific curiosity with corporate leadership in DeepMind's growth?
He embodies both a scientist's curiosity and a relentless competitive drive, pushing for publication in peer‑reviewed venues while guiding DeepMind toward ambitious product and platform milestones within the Google ecosystem.
Sebastian Mallaby: The Infinity Machine
Q: What was the significance of AlphaFold in the AI landscape, and how did it tie into DeepMind's broader strategy?
AlphaFold, especially AlphaFold 2, demonstrated that AI could solve complex scientific problems by integrating data and powerful models, drastically accelerating biology research and illustrating how DeepMind's approach could redefine scientific discovery.
