  • More Clean Sustainable Beauty

I so deeply appreciate the points of view of you and your guest.

More awareness, more education of chemical free, sustainable practices will always help.

I’m many years in the beauty industry and could no longer work with others because of the chemicals.

I had such brilliant training from chemists in the industry so I could understand hair from under the microscope because my job as an educator was sales. When my first daughter came along and had food sensitivities, this education really serve... more

  • Beauty Industry Education at its Best

Been listening to Green Beauty Conversations on YT for a few years but have switched to podcasts. Lorraine and the Formula Botanica team are the best educators in the industry and bring to the fore topics which are important and certainly not addressed by the mainstream beauty producers, but are being addressed by the indi beauty brands springing up worldwide who are being taught to think outside the box. • Love this! Plant based colorants

What a great podcast. Such an honest review of using botanicals in makeup. While listening to your chemist, I appreciate her knowledge and honesty in using plant pigments. It does give us me a realistic perspective of how to use plant pigments in makeup, where to get them, limitations with their uses, and experimentation steps during makeup creation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP311. The palm oil alternative that doesn't rely on trees
Q: Could you tell us what these oils are and why they're suitable for cosmetics?
We produce oils through a yeast-based fermentation process that can mimic palm oil and tropical butter compositions. The products include a red oil rich in carotenoids and a white, purer Zima Lipid Complex, both of which have strong antioxidant properties and can be tailored for different formulations.
EP311. The palm oil alternative that doesn't rely on trees
Q: Hi Nemailla, how are you doing today?
I'm doing great, thanks for having me. Excited to share how ÄIO is turning waste streams into valuable oils via fermentation, with potential to reduce the cosmetics industry's reliance on palm oil.
EP307. Why you don't need to be a chemist to formulate
Q: How should a beginner approach learning formulation?
Start with simple ingredients, experiment, observe how products feel and smell, and gradually build knowledge through doing rather than just reading; use real-world lab practice to translate theory into practice.
EP307. Why you don't need to be a chemist to formulate
Q: Did you ever feel you needed to be a chemist to formulate?
No, Natalie explains that formulation is a practical skill learned through hands‑on work and experimentation, not a credentialed degree, and many successful formulators come from non-chemistry backgrounds.
EP307. Why you don't need to be a chemist to formulate
Q: What background do you need to start formulating?
You need the basic high school level of chemistry at most, plus a willingness to learn, experiment, and practice by actually making products.
