  • Better than SHRM materials

I discovered Good Morning, HR when looking for free ways to get my SHRM recertification. By now I’ve listed to about 60 episodes, and I can’t emphasize enough just how educational and engaging Coffey’s podcast is; even though I often disagree with the guests, they get me thinking. Of course the supreme irony is that this podcast is about 236,4353% more impactful than anything I ever got from SHRM’s actual materials, which are expensive and generally vacuous or absolutely useless.

Rethinking Onboarding to Increase Engagement and Reduce Turnover with Anthony Sork
Q: How long is the critical window to influence attachment, and what happens after 120 days?
The critical window is 120 days; after that, the bond becomes more fixed, making it harder to change, which is why timely, targeted actions during the period are crucial.
Rethinking Onboarding to Increase Engagement and Reduce Turnover with Anthony Sork
Q: What is the day-one skill set a frontline leader needs to effectively onboard a new employee?
Leaders must be able to connect with individuals, understand their unique circumstances, and tailor their approach so onboarding is person-centric rather than a rigid checklist.
Helping Employees Lower Student Debt Burdens with Damon Thompson
Q: What are the subsidies and how do they work with federal student loans?
Subsidy programs calculate the true amortization of a loan and then apply subsidies to reduce the net monthly payment, often lowering payments dramatically; individuals must re-qualify annually, and the Department of Education handles the subsidy process while employers act as information conduits.
People Strategy in Small and Medium Businesses with Kelly Price
Q: How important is onboarding in the early days of a small business, and what does a good plan look like?
A strong onboarding plan, even a 30- to 90-day program, with clear training, integration, and feedback mechanisms to set new hires up for success.
People Strategy in Small and Medium Businesses with Kelly Price
Q: What are the core elements you audit first when starting with a new SMB client?
A three-tier audit focusing on compliance, operational efficiency, and strategy, with input from all HR-touch points in the organization.
