  • Better than SHRM materials

I discovered Good Morning, HR when looking for free ways to get my SHRM recertification. By now I’ve listed to about 60 episodes, and I can’t emphasize enough just how educational and engaging Coffey’s podcast is; even though I often disagree with the guests, they get me thinking. Of course the supreme irony is that this podcast is about 236,4353% more impactful than anything I ever got from SHRM’s actual materials, which are expensive and generally vacuous or absolutely useless.

Helping Employees Lower Student Debt Burdens with Damon Thompson
Q: What are the subsidies and how do they work with federal student loans?
Subsidy programs calculate the true amortization of a loan and then apply subsidies to reduce the net monthly payment, often lowering payments dramatically; individuals must re-qualify annually, and the Department of Education handles the subsidy process while employers act as information conduits.
People Strategy in Small and Medium Businesses with Kelly Price
Q: How important is onboarding in the early days of a small business, and what does a good plan look like?
A strong onboarding plan, even a 30- to 90-day program, with clear training, integration, and feedback mechanisms to set new hires up for success.
People Strategy in Small and Medium Businesses with Kelly Price
Q: What are the core elements you audit first when starting with a new SMB client?
A three-tier audit focusing on compliance, operational efficiency, and strategy, with input from all HR-touch points in the organization.
People Strategy in Small and Medium Businesses with Kelly Price
Q: When do you think SMBs should bring in an outside HR consultant to assist with strategy?
Usually two steps later than they should have done it; once they reach around 20-25 employees, it's time to start building a proactive HR foundation.
The Right Way to Use Personality Profiles with Dan Dalton
Q: Are there risks or pitfalls in relying on personality tests for hiring?
Yes, overreliance can create disparate impact or misfit if tools aren't properly validated for selection. It's important to validate tools, apply them to finalists, and combine profile data with other objective criteria.
