  • Commute inspo✨

I started listening to GeriPal regularly as a way to get in an inspired mindset during the commute to my job as a hospital PC social worker. My mom was a nurse practitioner in home based primary care at the VA and she started listening too. We had such great conversations about her work that I never would have heard, and it allowed her to be a mentor as well as a mom.

  • Very important topics, fantastic questions and guests

Just listened to the Anti-Asian Hate episode and highly recommend! As a public health professional, I found the host did a great job balancing the complexities of the important topic by asking great questions to each of the expert guests, blending scientific data, heart, and health/wellbeing with a side of musical talent. It was ✨dynamite✨.

  • Staying in the loop

I’m a UCSF alumnus, and now I live and work in rural Oregon. Providing up to date geriatric and palliative care can present challenges in my community due to a lack of understanding about the “mission” of these specialty areas. Listening to this podcast helps me feel connected to experts and innovators in this field, and helps me stay focused on what matters. I love the conversational yet scientific reporting style. It feels like I’m part of a loving club of nerdy-smart clinicians. Thank you fo... more

400th Episode Celebration: Ask Us Anything, Hot Ones-style
Q: What is your advice for patients and families to communicate with providers to guide conversations toward what matters most?
Use prepared tools like Prepare for Your Care, bring up goals of care without hesitation, and have the courage to initiate conversations with providers about prognosis and what matters to the patient.
400th Episode Celebration: Ask Us Anything, Hot Ones-style
Q: Why hasn't palliative care in the emergency department taken off, and what could be done?
Problems are structural (time constraints) rather than purely educational; calls for implementing time-efficient tools and integrating geriatrics and palliative care principles into ED workflows rather than relying only on training.
400th Episode Celebration: Ask Us Anything, Hot Ones-style
Q: Has any interview caused you to change something about your own clinical practice?
Yes; episodes on loneliness, buprenorphine use in symptom management, and deprescribing gabapentinoids have led to concrete practice changes, such as asking about loneliness in patients and reducing routine gabapentin use.
400th Episode Celebration: Ask Us Anything, Hot Ones-style
Q: What do you think palliative care will look like in 10 years time?
They expect continued growth in home-based and community-oriented care, broader integration with geriatrics, and more research support through NIH-funded infrastructure like ASCENT, with improvements in communication, hospital-based care, and outpatient care.
Pragmatic Trial to Increase Advance Care Planning: Anne Walling, Neil Wenger, & Rebecca Sudore
Q: Do you think the importance for advanced care planning spans that whole spectrum or is it just focused on seriously ill patients?
The group agreed that ACP is relevant across the life course but the study focused on seriously ill primary care patients to align resources with higher utilization and more immediate need, while acknowledging the value of tailoring conversations across stages of life.
