  • Great podcast

As a beginning gardener in Wisconsin, this podcast has been super informative for me. Especially since most YouTube garden content creators seem to be in California or the South, it’s nice to get the Wisconsin perspective (very different growing seasons!) If you’re into gardening, esp if you’re in the Midwest, I highly recommend Garden Talk.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What to do now to make your garden better later
Q: Mariam from Stevens Point asked how to keep tree roots from growing into raised beds when the beds are on the ground. What strategies help prevent roots from invading the beds?
Install an edging or barrier around the outside of the raised bed to block roots from encroaching; understand that large tree roots surface in the top 8-12 inches and may seek moisture and oxygen, so keeping a barrier and spacing away from trunks helps.
What to do now to make your garden better later
Q: Alex in Fitchburg emailed with a raised-bed gardening question involving road-safety concerns about chemicals from traffic near the road. Is it safe to grow edibles close to roads and what precautions should be taken?
If there is concern about soil contamination from road traffic, have soil tested through the UW Soil Testing Lab to determine lead or other contaminants, and consider raised beds on legs or moved away from the road edge; ensure good drainage and minimize risk by testing soil and choosing safe bed options.
Adding natives to an established garden; A photographer’s journey through grief and gardening
Q: What inspired you to photograph and write about grief through gardening?
The photographer explains that gardening became a way to cope with loss and that the garden and its evolving plants helped her feel Howard's presence; the book is a love letter to life and a tool for healing.
Happy lawns; Happy hydrangeas
Q: What is the best approach to overseeding clover into an existing lawn?
Overseeding clover is straightforward; mow short, dethatch, spread micro or dwarf white clover seed, and water to wash seeds into grooves; expect clover to establish over the first year and spread by year two.
Plants in the spring garden; How to design a spot for pollinators
Q: What are some of the basic flowers that are essential to a good pollinator garden?
Start with a broad palette of flowers in different shapes and colors, focus on native plants, and group plants together to create visible mass that attracts pollinators; observe your landscape to tailor plant choices to the most common pollinators in your area.
