  • Best podcast from the back country

Thank you Will for an excellent pod especially while going through medical

School. I’m primarily a hiker interested in the FKT scene. My only complaint is the way you sometimes pronounce “frucktose” 😂

  • Finally — a podcast that gets the Northeast right

I grew up in central New York and have lived all over the Northeast. I’ve hiked and ran in the Adirondacks and the Whites, but like a lot of people, I always used to look west for the “big” mountains and “big” adventures. From the Backcountry totally changed that for me.

It’s awesome to hear a podcast that highlights just how rugged the adventures here in the Northeast really are — whether it’s in the Adirondacks, the White Mountains, Maine, or Vermont. It’s refreshing to have something focused... more

  • Pick up a pack of Hannaford Seltzer Water today!

As a diehard river and spring fan, I never thought a store-brand seltzer would become my go-to choice of hydration for backcountry adventures. Then this podcast introduced me to Hannaford Seltzer Water! Wow! This seltzer does things in your mouth that fresh glacial runoff just can’t.

Do I need a slightly larger backpack? Sure, but it’s totally worth it. Picture this: You’ve just hiked 10 miles (16.093 kilometers) to a high alpine lake with a couple of friends. They pull out their ultralight wat... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#119 - Noah Dines | Catamount Trail Thru-Ski
Q: What was the mentality going into the Catamount Trail attempt, and did hubris play a role?
Noah anticipated strong challenges around technique and sleep, but his main surprises were logistical and related to the intensity of multi-day commitment rather than a simple speed test; he stayed calm, prepared, and focused on sustaining through the long days, while acknowledging some hubris in assuming the pace would be easier than it turned out to be.
#118 - Fyn Kynd | Grafton Notch Loop FKT
Q: Why did you choose to start the race from the southern trailhead and run Puzzle first
Starting from the southern trailhead followed the previous year's route and kept logistics simple by starting earlier; the direction was chosen more for consistency and personal pacing, with curiosity about alternative directions for possible improvements in future attempts.
#118 - Fyn Kynd | Grafton Notch Loop FKT
Q: What did fuel look like in 2024 and how did you overhaul it for 2025
In 2024 I relied on basic bars and improvised sodium strategies, which caused fatigue and cramps. In 2025 I adopted easily accessible carbs, current hydration strategies, and a higher, more deliberate carbohydrate intake (around 105 g/hour for most of the effort), plus better electrolyte management.
#118 - Fyn Kynd | Grafton Notch Loop FKT
Q: What did coaching with Kareem Malcolm change in your daily training
Coaching brought structure, objective workouts, and a focus on consistency, replacing years of unstructured training and frequent injuries with a long-term plan that emphasized threshold work, cross-training, and smarter fueling.
#116 - Tara Dower | Long Trail FKT
Q: What should someone considering an FKT attempt on the Long Trail focus on?
They should plan their nutrition strategy carefully and find a reliable crew and support team to help with the logistics.
