Itching to visit Beaune after this excellent episode of David’s endlessly fascinating The Drinking Hour podcast. A perfectly pitched chat that left me no choice but to grab a corkscrew and pour a glass.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 268 - Peter Stafford Bow
Q: Do you use AI or other tools in your writing process?
He states clearly that he does not use AI in any way for writing, though acknowledges that AI is impacting the broader industry and discusses concerns about authenticity and manuscript integrity.
Episode 268 - Peter Stafford Bow
Q: What inspired the central character Felix Hart and how does it relate to your own career?
Felix Hart is a heightened, morally flexible version of a modern supermarket wine buyer; he travels the world, negotiates powerfully, and often lands in scrapes that reveal the fragility and opportunism of big-business wine culture. The character draws heavily on the author's own experiences across off-licenses, supermarkets, and luxury retailers.
Episode 268 - Peter Stafford Bow
Q: How did you come up with the pseudonym for your books?
The pseudonym evolved from a desire to insulate the author from his employer and to keep brands separate, while also sounding authoritative and a bit pretentious in a joking way. It was chosen for its double-barreled feel and to project a certain seniority.
Episode 266 - Helen McGinn
Q: How did you get into supermarket wine buying and why did it appeal to you?
I joined a wine society at university mainly to get cheap wine and four half glasses on a Thursday night, which sparked a deeper interest in wine and the people who work in it.
Episode 257 - Napa with Jaime Araujo
Q: Yeah. And you have embraced making wine in a slightly different way to many estate-based producers. Just explain how Trois Noix works.
Trois Noix operates as a community-focused model using a custom-crush facility to share equipment and space, sourcing grapes from partner vineyards, and engaging in collaborative farming practices with local growers to keep costs manageable while producing a diverse range of wines.
