  • Thanks Mick. Sally is an inspiration with her passion for nature and good food. Her message on the threats to wild salmon and marine ecosystems is so important. The Salmon has been important in our history and mythology but we treat them with disdain. From damming our rivers to destroying their breeding beds and trying to replace them with battery farmed frankenfish. The wild salmon is close to gone from our waters.

Thanks to both of you for a very informative and enjoyable podcast.

  • So informative

Thank you for this podcast-I’ve learned so much about the food system, some shockers in there. I’m now more conscious about the food I eat and where it comes from. I’ve even started growing my own this year!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S3 Ep31: Buy Irish honey, save Ireland’s bees, with Aoife Nic Giolla Coda
Q: How do bees communicate distance and direction to flowers?
Bees use the waggle dance to convey coordinates relative to the sun, allowing others to find nectar sources based on angle and distance from the hive.
S3 Ep33: Baking real bread and building communities, with Sarah Richards of Seagull Bakery
Q: What made sourdough the focus for you after the crash, and how did that reshape your business?
The crash pushed me to study traditional fermentation, and sourdough offered a way to work with slower, more natural processes that could be scaled with care while keeping health and flavor at the center; it steered us toward heritage grains and local milling partnerships.
S3 Ep33: Baking real bread and building communities, with Sarah Richards of Seagull Bakery
Q: Am I right in thinking you were selling bread out of the boot of your car in Tremor at one stage?
Yes, that was me. I started there and slowly grew as demand built, with the market and local support helping push the idea that bread could be a staple even in a small town.
SECOND BITES: Paul Brophy, Ireland’s ‘Broccoli Baron’
Q: What can consumers do to support Irish broccoli and seasonal vegetables?
Ask questions about origin and price, support products that are clearly labeled as Irish and in-season, and be willing to pay a fair price that reflects growing costs; consumer awareness can drive retailers to adjust pricing and sourcing strategies.
SECOND BITES: Paul Brophy, Ireland’s ‘Broccoli Baron’
Q: What changes would help stabilize the industry from a policy standpoint?
Implement regulation to curb below-cost selling, restore protective pricing policies for fresh produce, and provide targeted funding for technology and capital investments that support long-term production rather than short-term market distortions.
