  • Love this podcast

I am so happy to have FWS as a federal organization. Without them, millions of Americans would be without knowledge and access to our wonderful wildlife.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pahrump Poolfish: A Unique Nevada Native
Q: What is the mark-recapture method used for the Perump Pool Fish, and how is it implemented in the field?
They use G minnow traps to capture fish, mark them by clipping a small fin, release, and recapture to estimate population size using Lincoln-Petersen style calculations, with occasional more intensive counts in tanks to validate numbers.
Western Atlantic Torpedo Ray!
Q: What happens when a torpedo ray strands on a beach and how do responders proceed?
Responders assess in real time, prioritize saving live animals, carry gear for quick rescue, and if the ray is dead, shift to necropsy and tissue sampling for research.
Convict Cichlids & America's "Goldilocks" Waters
Q: How do you approach the ethical dilemma of releasing non-native fish versus removing them, especially when the native ecosystem is at risk?
The approach starts with following legal requirements, then weighing ecological impact; in many cases release is avoided and fish are kept or removed when necessary, with a preference for actions that minimize harm to the ecosystem and native species.
Convict Cichlids & America's "Goldilocks" Waters
Q: Where are these non-native cichlids being found, and what conditions allow them to persist in places like Idaho or Utah?
They're found in warm springs and thermal refugia where year-round warmth provides habitat; human releases and aquarium dumping introduce them, and some springs stay warm enough to support tropical species, creating isolated pockets where these fish can survive.
Golden Redhorse: Fantastic Native Sucker
Q: Can you see the Golden Red Horse well enough to sight fish, and what about the general approach for targeting them versus other red horse species?
Sight fishing is common in shallow, clear spawning runs, and anglers target based on current seams, depth, and gravel, using lighter tackle and specific hook types; distinguishing features like tail color and lip structure help separate species.
