  • Best show on North American fish

As a European pisciphile, I was slightly skeptical but was lured in by the Northern Pike episode.

Now I’m addicted. This contains all aspects of the fish: the aesthetics, the hobbies & sports, the food, the business, the myths, the phenotype, the genetics, the behavior, and the very nerdy taxonomy and classification.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Weed Shiner: A Comeback Story!
Q: Why should people care about this small, plain-looking fish—what's the elevator pitch?
Because biodiversity underpins habitat resilience, and small-bodied fish like the weed shiner illustrate how restoration translates into ecosystem function, benefiting a wide range of species and supporting conservation efforts for natives while helping deter invasive species.
Weed Shiner: A Comeback Story!
Q: Where does this weed shiner fall on the fish family tree, and are there close relatives you can name?
Its closest relative is the coastal shiner, which lives in brackish water along the Gulf Coast; taxonomic classifications have shifted over time between genera, but the weed shiner remains a central riverine minnow in this region.
Weed Shiner: A Comeback Story!
Q: What does habitat restoration actually look like on Pool 8, and what kinds of vegetation are involved besides just algae?
Projects involve rebuilding islands, restoring wetlands, and increasing submersed and emergent vegetation like wild rice and cattails; the aim is to recreate habitat complexity across main channels, side channels, backwaters, and tailwaters to support weed shiners and other species.
Weed Shiner: A Comeback Story!
Q: Okay, so we have a huge river, tiny fish—what was the first time you came across this weed shiner in your job, and what's its story?
I've been with the Wisconsin DNR for over five years and we sample Pool 8 annually; the weed shiner was rare when I started, with some pools not catching it for the first decade of the monitoring program, but now we see numbers climbing dramatically due to habitat restoration and vegetation recovery.
Pahrump Poolfish: A Unique Nevada Native
Q: What is the mark-recapture method used for the Perump Pool Fish, and how is it implemented in the field?
They use G minnow traps to capture fish, mark them by clipping a small fin, release, and recapture to estimate population size using Lincoln-Petersen style calculations, with occasional more intensive counts in tanks to validate numbers.
