I am so happy to have FWS as a federal organization. Without them, millions of Americans would be without knowledge and access to our wonderful wildlife.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

All The Fish Names: Etymology Deep Dive!
Q: What have been some of the harder species, like where you've really had to knuckle down and do a lot of research to figure out what the real meaning of the name is?
There are definitely a handful that I have not figured out yet. Some Ichthyologists took a perverse delight in coming up with names that you just cannot figure out what they mean.
All The Fish Names: Etymology Deep Dive!
Q: So how good are the records for what we have? And how good were people at indicating why they were naming a species, something in particular? And has that changed over time?
Most of the names coined in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century usually did not have a section in the description that explicitly explained what the meaning of the name is, and this began to change probably sometime in post-World War II Ichthyology.
The Big-Shouldered Piebald Madtom
Q: Where do you find these fish specifically on the map?
You find them in the Mississippi coastal plain from northern Tennessee to central Mississippi, particularly in sandy streams with woody debris.
The Big-Shouldered Piebald Madtom
Q: Could you just describe the fish coloration size?
Piebald Madtoms have a black-beige pattern that repeats and their pectoral girdle is larger than most other madtoms of the same length.
Mahi-mahi (Dolphinfish)
Q: What are some of the questions you're trying to answer with these tags?
We're trying to figure out why the population of mahi is declining and to better understand their growth, age, and migration patterns.
