  • Stop with the woke nonsense

Came for clinically relevant information. Enough with the equity cultural nonsense. You’re making yourselves irrelevant.

I’m seasoned as a person but new to the Surgical Tech world. I went to school to be a CST. I’ve been a tech for a year now. Im learning how to speak “surgery”. And this podcast has been SO HELPFUL! I’ve had an “ah-ha” moment with this “Advocacy” episode really put things into perspective for me. I wish Miss Chris was my teacher while I was in ST school. Great interview! If I ever have surgery I want Nurse Brenna in my OR! She sounds like she is on top of things! I hope that all OR personnel are as committed to this process as she is.

Sterile Processing 101: From Dirty to Sterile - The Instrument Reprocessing Lifecycle
Q: Walk us through the Sterile Processing life cycle from decontam to final packaging.
Jen explains that after decontam, instruments are inspected for grooves, teeth, and function, then packaged according to load weight limits and stored on racks until cooled and ready for transport back to the OR; throughout, adherence to IFUs, careful cleaning, and quality checks are critical to ensure sterility and prevent delays.
The Hidden World of Biofilm: Exploring the Dangers Lurking in our Instruments
Q: What practical steps can OR teams take to prevent biofilm formation at the point of use?
Remove as much blood and tissue as possible in the OR, use sterile water rather than saline for cleaning, and ensure robust point-of-use cleaning to prevent nutrients from feeding biofilms.
The Hidden World of Biofilm: Exploring the Dangers Lurking in our Instruments
Q: What exactly is a biofilm and why is it so problematic in the OR?
A biofilm is a structured community of bacteria enveloped in a protective matrix that adheres to surfaces like instruments; it makes bacteria highly resistant to antibiotics and allows them to shed viable cells during processing, increasing infection risk.
Microbes in Motion: Understanding Pathogen Transfer & Environmental Contamination
Q: Why is it unsafe to reuse syringes in anesthesia?
Reusing syringes can transfer viruses between patients; the practice remains a concern with significant documented risk, underscoring the need for single-use syringes for each patient.
Microbes in Motion: Understanding Pathogen Transfer & Environmental Contamination
Q: What are the most persistent pathogens to control in the OR?
Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas, C. difficile, and certain viruses and fungi persist on surfaces and require targeted, organism-specific disinfectants and proper dwell times.
