  • Very much not as advertised

Was very excited given the host’s background but this is a big let down. The explanations and analysis are disappointingly surface level. The few mental health takes are simplistic at best, highly dubious at worst. Stiff delivery yet also weirdly salacious/sensational in tone? Plus you don’t learn anything new you wouldn’t already know if you were aware of these stories (as most true crime fans will be) - so why at I listening?

  • Detailed Description of Perpetrator' History

I appreciate the detailed history of the person behind the crime. Certainly there is no excuse for any of their crimes, but the patterns of these murderers is clear and useful for understanding of what leg them to that moment.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ENCORE: Revisiting Alex Murdaugh - A Conversation with Valerie Bauerlein
Q: Can you briefly recap the Alex Murdaugh case and where things stand today?
The case centers on a powerful South Carolina dynasty, a double homicide on Moselle, and a long arc of alleged financial crimes that culminated in two murder convictions that were later overturned on a technical concern, with a new trial expected due to questions about jury tampering and ongoing appeals.
Rex Heuermann - The Gilgo Beach Serial Killer: A Conversation with Josh Ritter
Q: What is notable about the cooperation with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit in a plea deal?
Ritter notes it is unusual for a plea to require cooperation with the FBI's BAU, given the defendant's Fifth Amendment rights; it suggests prosecutors sought to gain additional insights into offender behavior that could aid future cases, while keeping the plea intact.
Rex Heuermann - The Gilgo Beach Serial Killer: A Conversation with Josh Ritter
Q: Why do you think Heuermann chose to plead guilty now, after so many years and mounting evidence?
Josh Ritter explains it as a strategic decision not primarily about facing death penalties (which New York does not have) but about avoiding the risk and spectacle of a trial, accepting a certainty of life sentences, and possibly leveraging a plea to secure a controlled, predictable outcome rather than a protracted court process.
Nick Reiner - The Murders of Rob & Michelle Reiner: A Conversation with Josh Ritter
Q: Josh, today we're going to talk about Nick Reiner's arraignment. For listeners who may not follow court procedure closely, what actually happens at an arraignment and what did yesterday's hearing tell us about where this case stands right now?
An arraignment formally advises the charges and allegations, and it's the defendant's first chance to plead; in this case, the defendant pleaded not guilty, with initial delays for evaluations and a later withdrawal of counsel leading to a new arraignment date and a preliminary hearing setting.
S5 E9 Ask Candice Anything, Part 2
Q: Were you ever overlooked for an assignment or promotion because you are a woman?
I wasn't really expecting to get it, but I did get to train in the Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico, even amidst competition from male agents.
