  • Spoiled by very long disclaimer(s) at end of pod

Informative and interesting, shame it is so US centric. Spoiled by very long disclaimer(s) at end of pod which when I'm listening, seem as long (or longer) than the pos itself!

  • Interesting but limited?

Well structured and presented as ever by Richard Edgar but there’s too much generalising as the USA has made more progress on its climate response than is given credit for. Could this be lazy analysis as it’s easier to accept the narrative that America has not progressed under the Trump administration? Companies all over the world continue to make adjustments using technology in the relentless pursuit of profit using less inputs, and it’s not always down to government coercion.

Fidelity Answers: Where should I look if I need to play defence?
Q: What are the long-term opportunities that you've been spotting in equity markets, and how might they hold up if the AI story falters?
The team notes that high-quality equities, especially in cyclicals with depressed multiples, can offer defensive upside if AI sentiment cools, while continuing to benefit from earnings resilience and balance-sheet strength; the discussion also highlights the importance of stock-level selection within sectors rather than broad sector bets, and the potential for value in areas like industrials and utilities tied to energy transition and grid investment.
The Investor’s Guide to Asia: The ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’
Q: You've described this as a scenario of the haves and have-nots. Can you explain what that means, please?
It refers to a two-tier dynamic where North Asia, led by Korea and Taiwan, enjoys robust AI-driven capex and export strength, while many Southeast Asian economies struggle with higher energy import bills, inflationary pressures, and weaker growth. The trajectory of policy responses, currency stability, and capital flows will likely widen performance gaps unless policy credibility and domestic demand support improve across the lagging economies.
The Investor’s Guide to Asia: The ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’
Q: George, can we start with you? And maybe just putting this into broader context, we've obviously seen quite a lot of divergence across the Asian economies. What does it mean for investors?
The main takeaway is that Asia exhibits a persistent North-South split: North Asia benefits from AI-capex cycles and stronger domestic demand, while Southeast Asia faces energy-import dependencies and more fragile growth. Investors should embrace diversification across rates, FX, and credit to capture the dispersion and avoid broad-based exposure, focusing on sectors and countries with structural resilience and policy credibility.
Fidelity Answers: Volatility is extreme. What are the investment trends I should keep in focus?
Q: What is the strongest underpinning for the equity market through the rest of 2026?
The strongest underpinning is the upward trajectory of earnings, with analysts seeing earnings continuing to rise through 2026, supported by AI-driven productivity gains and improved earnings visibility, which helps offset higher valuations and sustains a broader market rally.
Fidelity Answers: What impact is the Middle East conflict having on industry?
Q: Today, what can we say about the likely impact on the ground of the shock facing the global economy and how should portfolios be positioned?
Analysts are conducting cross-sector, bottom-up assessments to identify which supply chains and cost structures will be disrupted, with a focus on energy, raw materials, and consumer impact, while scenario planning continues to map possible post-conflict outcomes and how to adjust portfolios accordingly.
