  • Balanced discussions

I am a huge fan of Dr Coleman’s sensible, professional and balanced advice to estranged parents. I highly recommend following him on his Substack and both of his books on estrangement. I am working through his second books worksheets and found them challenging but very helpful in understanding myself and my son.

  • Podcasts

I’ve listened to three of the Dr.Coleman’s new podcast after following him through his newsletter and Zoom meetings for three years. These segments with other professionals on the subject of estrangement with perhaps the expert on the subject, Dr. Coleman , are like a master class. Dr. Coleman is clear on the numerous causes and dos and dont’s and essentially says much of the same things, week after week, but adding these other perspectives adds so much to my understanding of the subject of estr... more

What Are Recovered Memories? How Memory Distortion Leads to Family Estrangement with Mark Pendergrast
Q: What drew you to the topic of memory distortion and its impact on families?
The guest explains personal stakes from his own life and outlines how false or distorted memories can lead to estrangement, while acknowledging the real harm suffered by those who were abused.
Anxious Parenting, Estrangement, and Raising Boys vs Girls with Ruth Whippman
Q: What changes would you recommend for societies to better support families and reduce the stress around raising boys today?
Invest in systems that reduce inequality and provide real social supports so families aren't forced into hypervigilant parenting. Normalize emotional education for all genders, promote positive yet realistic models of masculinity, and emphasize early nurturing and care as a foundation for long-term healthy development rather than treating children as products to be optimized.
Anxious Parenting, Estrangement, and Raising Boys vs Girls with Ruth Whippman
Q: What are the practical implications for parents trying to balance nurture with independence, especially for families with multiple kids?
Parents should acknowledge that while parenting matters, it isn't the sole determinant of outcomes. It helps to provide consistent nurture and boundary-setting, reduce excessive surveillance, and create space for children to develop autonomy. This balanced approach can support healthier relationships and reduce the pressure that fuels estrangement and anxiety.
Anxious Parenting, Estrangement, and Raising Boys vs Girls with Ruth Whippman
Q: So, you know, your research and others have shown that boys are born quite a bit behind girls. How would you summarize what is adaptive about the male psychology that requires more self-regulation support?
The science suggests that male brains are developmentally a bit behind in emotional self-regulation at birth, which means boys often need more nurturing and care in early years, and that this nurturing helps them learn to regulate themselves as they grow. However, social messages about masculinity can undermine that need, making it harder for boys to receive the support they require and increasing risk for later difficulties if the care is insufficient.
Changing Relations Between Parents and Adult Children with Frank Furstenberg
Q: How has the perception of marriage and its role in parenting evolved, and what does that mean for adult-child relationships?
Marriage has shifted from primarily an economic and developmental institution to a source of personal growth and identity, which in turn changes expectations within parent-child relationships, giving adult children a stronger sense of entitlement and sometimes a greater ability to distance themselves when those expectations aren't met.
