  • Real Talk about our ‘Money Stories’

This has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. I love Meghan’s interviewing style and the real talk she draws out from people about how they think about money, life experiences that imprinted their views on money, and the stories are all so relatable. Excellent addition to the FIRE community.

  • Relatable and Informative!

Great to hear FI(RE) stories that I can relate to, and take nuggets of advice to apply to my own situation. You also get to hear about potential pitfalls and learn from others’ mistakes that more “official” advice-channels may not think to cover. Looking forward to more episodes after I work through the backlog (just found this podcast)!

  • Looking forward to more

I learned about this podcast from one of the interviewees. I have been looking for more FI content about people like, those that implemented the principles of the FI community and now are actually living the FI life, retired or not.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Cancer Reinforced Kathleen's FI Plan - Part 2 | Ep. 98
Q: What modeling or tools did you use to stress-test contingencies?
We used Monte Carlo simulations through tools like Projection Lab and Bolden, plus custom in-house modeling to account for lumpiness in expenses and to build safety buffers.
How Cancer Reinforced Kathleen's FI Plan - Part 2 | Ep. 98
Q: How did the cancer diagnosis affect your FI plans and perspective on retirement?
It forced us to confront the fragility of plans and to lean into contingencies, reinforcing the value of care-coverage buffers, flexible timelines, and ensuring we could still pursue time freedom even if a health crisis hit.
Surprise FI - Jalynn J. | Ep. 99
Q: Why did you decide to retire early, and how did you ensure you could maintain healthcare and stability?
I aimed to be financially, physically, and mentally prepared. We moved to Texas for affordability, ensured health coverage through ACA plans, and did careful planning with independent advisors. The result was retirement at 44 with a plan that could still adapt to changing needs.
Surprise FI - Jalynn J. | Ep. 99
Q: What was the pivotal moment that convinced you FI was achievable for you?
A mentor at work asked if I was investing in my money, and when I started learning more and attending company seminars, I began to understand mutual funds, diversification, and eventually the 4% rule. That lightbulb moment made FI feel tangible and within reach.
Surprise FI - Jalynn J. | Ep. 99
Q: How did you first get exposed to financial independence, and what drew you to it?
I was drawn in by hearing other people talk openly about money and financial goals. My wife showed me a budget and investing mindset, which led us to maxing out retirement accounts, later adding 529s for the kids, and gradually building a broader portfolio. The community and stories of others achieving FI helped me realize this was a real pathway I could pursue.
