Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ed-tech in times of Trump
Q: Is there any grounds for hope in 2026, given the ongoing integration of technology into education?
Hope rests in the people who are resisting easy corporate narratives—teachers and administrators who engage critically with these technologies, asking nuanced questions and pushing back against simplistic, market-driven solutions.
Ed-tech in times of Trump
Q: What concerns do you have about how chatbots and AI are affecting students, teachers, and overall education systems?
There are concerns about surveillance, dependency, and the dilution of human agency. Chatbots can replace or augment roles like counseling and tutoring, potentially eroding human-centered approaches. The long-term impacts include amplified inequalities and a shift toward efficiency over humane pedagogy.
Ed-tech in times of Trump
Q: What's actually happening from on the ground, from as far as you know, how is AI actually being pushed into public education? Who's actually doing this and what do you make sense of this push for AI in schools in terms of power, money, control, authoritarianism?
AI in schools is being pushed by a mix of federal initiatives and corporate pressure, with multiple platforms jockeying for space. The trend resembles a chaotic rollout where power dynamics, money, and governance gaps shape how and where AI is adopted, often prioritizing market interests over ethical considerations or robust accountability.
The ethics of AI in education
Q: Are there particular underutilised philosophical traditions the AI community should engage with?
Yes, non-Western traditions and educational theories can provide valuable insights into ethical discussions.
The ethics of AI in education
Q: How confident are you in attributing ethical problems with AI to the private sector?
I'm quite confident, as profit often trumps other values in tech companies' decisions.
