  • Wrong!

•EPISODE: Rasputin. Annoying Guest Catchphrases: “Right?” So often — sometimes several times per sentence! —as to make this episode unlistenable. Also “OK?”, “Good question” and *giggle*.

•EPISODE: Tang Dynasty. Annoying Guest Catchphrase: “if you will”. If I will what???

  • Interesting and captivating

I can’t keep up with all the podcasts that I subscribe, so I’ve always been doing catching up. When I listened to last year’s episodes talking about the Abbasid dynasty a couple weeks ago, I loved it so much that I’ve been listening to this podcast ever since, trying to catch up to date. I truly enjoy listening to Echoes of History!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Who Were The Sons Of Moses?
Q: What subjects were they best known for, and how did those skills translate into their influence on politics and culture?
Their main specialty was mathematics, complemented by engineering, astronomy, and chemistry. These skills enabled them to manage treasury calculations, negotiate with rulers and foreign powers, and pioneer mechanical marvels and devices that showcased scientific prowess and enhanced court prestige.
Who Were The Sons Of Moses?
Q: Can you explain who the Banu Musa are for listeners who haven't encountered them in the game or history?
They are three brothers known collectively as the Banu Musa, sons of a con artist, who rose from a surprising background to become the Khalifa's chief mathematicians, engineers, and political actors in medieval Baghdad, deeply integrated into the House of Wisdom and Abbasid governance.
The Assassination of Julius Caesar
Q: What sources do we rely on to reconstruct the assassination and its aftermath, and how reliable are they?
We rely on a cluster of later sources (Plutarch, Suetonius, Appian, Cassius Dio) that, despite biases, converge on core events like the assassination, while exact dialogue from Caesar is uncertain and Shakespearean embellishment is avoided in the game context.
The Assassination of Julius Caesar
Q: Why did the Senate feel compelled to act before Caesar could depart for the East, and how did that reflect on Rome's fear of a kingly Caesar?
Because Caesar's eastern campaigns and consolidation of power threatened to crown himself king; removing him before he could return would preserve the Republic's framework and prevent a monarch from emerging from within Rome's own leadership.
The Assassination of Julius Caesar
Q: Matt, could you guess what the one way is as you get rid of a man who's appointed for life?
The only way to remove a life-appointed dictator was murder, illustrating how Caesar's unprecedented accumulation of power left Rome with no constitutional remedy.
