In this podiobook: Art is an up-and-coming interface designer, working on the management of data flow along the Massachusetts Turnpike. He's doing the best work of his career and can guarantee that the system will be, without question, the most counterintuitive, user-hostile piece of software ever pushed forth into the world. Why? This is a better story than the author's description makes it sound. Some whacked out dude is stuck on a roof of an insane asylum telling you all about how he got there. It's funny, interesting, near-futuristic and suspensful. Well worth a listen. One of the better audiobooks here on itunes. It's proof that the future will be a little bit more difficult and a little bit more amazing than the present.
I love Doctorow's vision if the future, much of it is a vision of the now. And the way things might be, predicting emerging trends. Docotorow is an entertaining ideas man who populates his books with more sexually aggressive women than I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Hooked from the first chapter. Very Hitchhikeresque. Well written, clever and all around a solid, but sardonic, book.
