Dopey Podcast is the world’s greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a ... more

  • Don’t get demonetized Dave!!

Love this podcast Dave. I’m 4.5 years clean after almost 20 years using old school H and fentanyl out of necessity my last 2 years of using. I’ve been listening since I had about 6 months clean. Just a heads up, your decision to play Lou Reed on the last podcast is amazing bc velvet underground was my soundtrack of choice for booting up. However, using copyrighted music will get your episodes demonetized. Just a heads up. Keep doing God’s work!!!!

Boring. You have to hear the nitty-gritty in order to appreciate the miracle. He just provided a litany of things your listeners in recovery have heard 1 million times- yawn

  • Serious without taking itself too seriously.

I first listened to dopey when you were interviewing Ingrid Casares I was blown away by the podcast and I was still able to laugh. I appreciate the fine line between the serious subject matter and the humor that really helps people feel less alone. Loved your interview with Ditty and Sara Clark. Keep up the great work and toodles for Chris.

  • Life Changing

I found this podcast from the Billy Strings interview and at the time I was deep in the depths of my opiate addiction. I am now 2 months clean from all substances and so thankful for the companionship of Chris and Dave during my rehab stint. I’ll write an email soon and TOOOODLEES for Chris!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Ounce of Fentanyl in Federal Prison, Cirrhosis Returns & 22 Years Off Heroin — Shane Enholm Returns!
Q: What was the turning point that helped you decide to get clean?
The realization that continuing the cycle would ruin my health and life, combined with a commitment to the 12-step program and the support of others in recovery, kept me moving toward sobriety even when the pull to use was strong.
Super Junky NYC - Copping for Sid and Nancy, Aryan Brotherhood Oxy & Smuggling Drugs into Rehab: Dopey's Greatest Hit's Ned Van Zandt Returns
Q: How did Sid and Nancy fit into your Chelsea Hotel era and what do you recall about the murder night?
I was part of the Chelsea crowd; Sid and Nancy were there in the orbit of the scene, and I had interactions leading up to the murder night; I believe the drug dealer in the hotel was involved and that Sid may not have been the killer, based on what I observed and what I recall after the fact.
Super Junky NYC - Copping for Sid and Nancy, Aryan Brotherhood Oxy & Smuggling Drugs into Rehab: Dopey's Greatest Hit's Ned Van Zandt Returns
Q: What was the process of getting sober like after years of using, and why Hawaii?
Family pressure and a mounting legal/financial toll pushed me toward treatment; Hawaii offered a private clinic experience with an expectation of surf and relaxation, but it ended up being a serious, structured program that helped me reset and eventually stay sober for over a decade.
Tripping Face at Dominican Holidaze - JRAD, Disco Biscuits, Cocaine Cab Driver, Silly Sticks & the Last Hurrah Before Rehab, Zach Frank Returns!
Q: Do you want to summarize the joy of your hat and the Knicks moment for the crowd?
Yes, the Knicks run represented a peak of joy and community that mirrored the experience of recovery: a hard-fought ascent from defeat to victory, shared with teammates and supporters, providing a tangible example of what persistence looks like when you choose to stay the course.
He Shot Blue Ecstasy, Boofed It & Went to Work: Jed Payne on Relapse, Lies, Shame & One Year Back
Q: What has changed this time around for Jed compared to earlier relapses?
Jed explains he didn't lose everything this time, which made the process harder in some ways because he couldn't simply start over in a new place; instead he had to face wreckage, rebuild two households, and take a more humble job while rebuilding trust and responsibilities.
