They say the Devil’s in the details, but when conspiracies captivate our imaginations, we often overlook the real devils walking among us. From the creators of the hit podcast The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill comes a new show, Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, which takes you back to the Satanic Panic that gripped America in the 1980s and 90s. This limited series explores how hysteria gripped parents and... more

I am highly disappointed in this series after really enjoying The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill. The coverage of the Satanic Panic was interesting but also difficult to follow. It feels very disjointed throughout the episodes, jumping back and forth and often just feeling tortuous. When the topic of January 6th was first broached on the podcast, it was an “aha” moment for me. This is a politically charged left-leaning podcast. I am not a huge fan of Trump, but I was baffled at how the creators of t... more
This podcast is well-balanced in information, analysis, and criticism of good intentions gone awry. Some people have low ratings because of the politics but isn’t that the point? Events like this aren’t contained. Movements don’t care about keeping things neatly sectioned off. When people obscure the truth, it eventually leads to widespread corruption, yes, even among those you’re actively supporting. This isn’t a call to be anti-conservative, it’s a call for all of us to beware the restless dar... more
“Deep” is an accurate description! Great writing and investigative reporting helps pull back the curtain on so many related topics including current affairs like QAnon and the ties between fear and the ways it makes us grasp for answers…even when it’s nowhere close to the real answers we need. Thanks!
This podcast spends more time ranting about Trump and conspiracy theorists than actually exploring thoughtful Christian ideas. It’s ironic, even absurd, that it claims to speak for Christianity when its core figure, Jesus Christ, is widely considered a myth by historians. Instead of fostering reflection or nuance, it comes off as a soapbox for outrage and partisan commentary. If you’re looking for insight or meaningful discussion, look elsewhere.
My concern as an abuse survivor (my daughter was raped as a child in a church) is that the emphasis on the “panic” and false reports has enabled the institution to have an excuse and to once again walk away from victims. I recognize there have been efforts to address this in the podcast series, however the weight of the presentation is towards the sensational failures of imagination.
I do see the rise of armed ushers and safety teams at churches as the new “panic”. You can get the boys to come ... more

Exploring the complexities of the Satanic Panic that engulfed America during the 1980s and 90s, this limited series sheds light on how widespread fear and sensationalism affected communities and shaped public discourse. The series addresses personal and societal ramifications, linking historical events like the West Memphis Three trials and the influence of figures within the Moral Majority. Deeply rooted in discussions about truth, accountability, and the interplay between faith and politics, the content interrogates how narratives of fear were used to control and divert attention from underlying issues within both society and the church. Noteworthy is its commitment to engaging with sensitive topics such as trauma, recovery, and the exper... more
