They say the Devil’s in the details, but when conspiracies captivate our imaginations, we often overlook the real devils walking among us. From the creators of the hit podcast The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill comes a new show, Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, which takes you back to the Satanic Panic that gripped America in the 1980s and 90s. This limited series explores how hysteria gripped parents and... more

As someone whose faith matured and flourished as a young adult during the panic, a lot of this history shaped who I am today and I’ve lived many recent moments having to reshape perspectives I once held as “obvious truths “ into realizing and accepting them as what they really were -“manipulative tactics”. Untruths should never be accepted as a means the further the kingdom. Did Jesus use those tactics? As a firm believer I have been coming to this gradual realization , that I was duped, befor... more
Having grown up in the ‘70/80s, a lot of this resonated with me. I’m glad to find that others see how the moral panic of my childhood turned into the insanity of QAnon and January 6th.
For the most part, I felt this was an amazing podcast. Unfortunately, there was a few times there were blanket statements made. One was with the congressman about it being harder for 20 somethings to want to be part of the church! He is clearly out of touch. For the last 2 years, there has been a resurgence of young adults coming to Christ.
I’m a little amused at the 1-star reviews claiming that Cosper is a “leftist” and how dare he suggest that MAGA is full of conspiracy theories!
Cosper is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative and simply has his eyes open to see the pattern of satanic/moral panics and how they are playing out today. He hits the nail on the head.
Really enjoyed this podcast. Loved the entire premise of it, and the many lessons we can learn. The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill was rad and this one was no different. Pumped for more pods from Christianity Today.

The depths of fear and superstition during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 1990s come alive through explorative narratives that scrutinize the cultural and political ramifications of this era. By weaving together personal stories and sociopolitical analyses, the discussions critically address how false narratives of satanic rituals and abuse not only impacted victims directly but also skewed public perception of morality and justice. Each episode invites listeners to reflect on the lasting legacies of these events, emphasizing the need for accountability within faith communities and highlighting the misallocation of focus from genuine issues to sensational fears.
