  • Great for Golf Course design Fans

Love this show for fans of the design, architecture, and agronomy side of the golf business. I would love to hear an episode about Architect’s Golf Club in New Jersey. It is a beautiful course and each hole is based on the work of an architect from the golden age of design. This would be a cool way to talk about many different architects in one episode!

  • Informed and fun perspectives

Garrett and his team have interesting episodes that any avid golfer will enjoy.

Other golf course podcasts are random musings of people after they’ve played some great golf course somewhere. This show, on the other hand, always teaches me something I didn’t know and is entertaining to boot.

  • Architecture is the engine of good

Excellent mix of golf arch, design, and theory. Really appreciate the focus on history, unlike most golf pods which lean PGA fanboy.

Not sure if PJ is an AI artifice to help hackers learn basics, but the Garrett tag team works.

This is currently the best Fried Egg pod.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Great Architects: William Flynn
Q: Where did Flynn's diagonals and angled tees originate from, and was this a conscious choice or a natural evolution?
There was a strong, conscious emphasis on diagonals and diagonal lines that shaped both the line of play and the angles players face, reflecting a systematic approach to lines of play rather than random variation; this diagonal logic evolved with the Philadelphia School's influence and Wilson's development, and you can see it consistently across Flynn's courses.
Great Courses: Shinnecock Hills
Q: You discuss the tension between the Victorian template hole philosophy and Flynn's land-first approach. How did Flynn's Philadelphia School background influence his work at Shinnecock, relative to McDonald and Rayner?
Flynn's approach diverged by letting the terrain dictate strategy rather than prescribing a fixed set of hole templates. He sought a seamless integration with the landscape, hiding strategic features within natural forms, which opened space for architects to read the land and craft a course that evolves with play rather than guiding a player through a predetermined sequence of holes.
Great Courses: Shinnecock Hills
Q: Eight years ago, you co-authored a short article for the USGA website about the evolution of Shinnecock Hills from 1891 to 1931. How should we read those three versions in the context of American golf architecture?
Those three versions show a shift from Victorian, template-based design to a land-driven, modern approach. The first versions reflected a cohesive, almost textbook Victorian system; the MacDonald/Rayner redesigns introduced more standardized ideas about strategic holes; Flynn's 1931 redesign, however, used the land itself to dictate design and introduced a more fluid, emergent strategy that relies on terrain, wind, and subtler cues rather than explicit templates.
Great Architects: Donald Ross (feat Bradley Klein)
Q: Would a Donald Ross version of Augusta National have looked like?
It's speculative, but Ross would likely have produced a routing that embraced dramatic elevation changes and strategic shot-shaping, though MacKenzie's vision was tailored more to Augusta's dramatic landforms; the two architects would have approached the site very differently given their styles.
Great Architects: Donald Ross (feat Bradley Klein)
Q: How would you assess Ross's catalog by geography?
Ross's best work is concentrated around the Great Lakes and Northeast corridors, where glacial terrain and regional landscapes shaped his routing and topography; he did fewer projects west of the Mississippi, with a notable foray into California and other regions.
