Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Speech and Language Therapy in Primary Progressive Aphasia
Q: What is the role of speech and language therapists in supporting a diagnosis of PPA?
SLTs contribute to language and motor speech assessments, help distinguish variants (non-fluent, logopenic, semantic), support patients and families in understanding the diagnosis, and provide critical post-diagnosis care and planning.
Speech and Language Therapy in Primary Progressive Aphasia
Q: Jason, from a medical perspective, what is it about PPA that might make it difficult to diagnose?
PPA presents in diverse, language-centered ways that are close to everyday function, is not always recognized by clinicians, and existing diagnostic tools are often tuned for memory rather than language, leading to delays and misdiagnosis.
Rainwater Prize Winners: Advancing Tau Research
Q: What have we learned about tau species and therapeutic targets from the prize-winning work?
The work highlights that not only tangles but soluble tau species can disrupt neuronal activity, suggesting therapies must address specific intracellular soluble tau forms and consider their location (intracellular vs extracellular) to be effective.
Rainwater Prize Winners: Advancing Tau Research
Q: What makes tauopathies particularly challenging and important to study?
Tauopathies involve a variety of tau forms and distributions across brain regions, and understanding which tau species are driving dysfunction is crucial for developing targeted therapies without disrupting normal tau function.
Detecting UTIs Early in Dementia
Q: Why are UTIs in dementia particularly hard to diagnose and manage?
Because communication is impaired in many people with dementia, symptoms older adults usually report can be missed, and there is baseline bacterial colonization in the urinary tract that can obscure true infections, making it difficult to distinguish infection from colonization.
