  • Exudes lack of peace and joy

I don’t mind that he is self-taught and achieved his enlightenment on his own. However, there is a very good reason that monks often wait a decade or more after ordination before being permitted to give Dhamma talks. David’s hurried speaking is a symptom of a lack of maturity in the Dhamma and quite off-putting for those used to Dhamma talks and lectures given by monks or trained laypeople. I believe that he means well and may be knowledgeable, but listeners should be wary of his self-aggrandize... more

  • Thorough and practical

This is an excellent introduction to the teachings of the Buddha presented in clear and accessible language. Unlike many Buddhist podcasts, this one is practical rather than aspirational, and is a very useful guide and how to start and build a practice. I always thought the goal of the path was enlightenment, but now I know it's enlight-a-ment!

  • Beautiful teachings

David Roylance is well spoken and direct in his presentation of the Buddha’s teachings. I like to mix it up, sometimes listening to a class on the Pali canon and sometimes taking a weeklong retreat. David’s approach is what I’ve been looking for for many years.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 1010 - (Pali Canon Study Group) - Foundation in The Teachings - Volume 3 - (Chapter 101-110)
Q: How should one approach balancing study with practice according to the reading?
Study should be paired with active practice, memorization, reflection, and enthusiastic investigation; intellectual understanding must translate into daily applying effort to transform the mind.
Ep. 1009 - (Group Learning Program) - Guided Breathing Mindfulness Meditation and Student Questions
Q: Is prayer part of the Buddha's teachings?
No. The Buddha did not teach prayer as a means to obtain material gains; spiritual progress comes from wise decisions and training the mind, not invoking supernatural intervention.
Ep. 1009 - (Group Learning Program) - Guided Breathing Mindfulness Meditation and Student Questions
Q: If you're new, what is the simplest way to approach this teaching?
Begin with the basic guidance of the Eightfold Path and use the temple's free resources to study, practice, and gradually apply the teachings in daily life, while attending classes and retreats to deepen understanding.
Ep. 1005 - (Group Learning Program) - Chapter 13 - Identifying Cravings: Cultivating Non-Craving and Analysis of The Mind at Wat Tung Yu
Q: There is an old saying about craving from others versus craving from oneself. How do you address craving that comes from culture or within us?
Craving comes from the mind regardless of source; culture may shape it, but awakening requires seeing that craving arises internally. Practice the Eightfold Path to cultivate wisdom and move toward unconditioned happiness, rather than following culturally prescribed cravings.
Ep. 1005 - (Group Learning Program) - Chapter 13 - Identifying Cravings: Cultivating Non-Craving and Analysis of The Mind at Wat Tung Yu
Q: If I'm stressed after a hectic day, what alternatives exist to avoid slipping into craving?
Build a consistent practice of breathing mindfulness, meditation, and generosity; use red-light/bodily sensations as triggers to cut off craving, and proactively expose yourself to challenging situations to train the mind to let go.
