  • Exudes lack of peace and joy

I don’t mind that he is self-taught and achieved his enlightenment on his own. However, there is a very good reason that monks often wait a decade or more after ordination before being permitted to give Dhamma talks. David’s hurried speaking is a symptom of a lack of maturity in the Dhamma and quite off-putting for those used to Dhamma talks and lectures given by monks or trained laypeople. I believe that he means well and may be knowledgeable, but listeners should be wary of his self-aggrandize... more

  • Thorough and practical

This is an excellent introduction to the teachings of the Buddha presented in clear and accessible language. Unlike many Buddhist podcasts, this one is practical rather than aspirational, and is a very useful guide and how to start and build a practice. I always thought the goal of the path was enlightenment, but now I know it's enlight-a-ment!

  • Beautiful teachings

David Roylance is well spoken and direct in his presentation of the Buddha’s teachings. I like to mix it up, sometimes listening to a class on the Pali canon and sometimes taking a weeklong retreat. David’s approach is what I’ve been looking for for many years.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 986 - (Pali Canon Study Group) - Foundation in The Teachings - Volume 3 - (Chapter 21-30)
Q: How can one balance enjoying pleasant experiences without letting conditioned pleasant feelings lead to craving?
By developing strong mindfulness through breathing meditation and applying right effort, so that the mind recognizes pleasant sensations as transient and does not cling to them, allowing one to enjoy experiences without craving for permanent satisfaction.
Ep. 990 - (Group Learning Program) - Chapter 8 - Transforming The Three Poisons: Craving, Anger, and Ignorance
Q: aversion to a thought or idea versus breaking contact—how to tell the difference?
The answer is that aversion involves pushing a thought away due to wrong view and the belief that leaving or avoiding will solve the problem, while a wise decision aligned with right view may involve choosing to move or end a relationship for healthier reasons; the key is recognizing whether painful feelings are caused by the mind's cravings or by the external situation, and whether one maintains right view.
Ep. 988 - (Group Learning Program) - Guided Loving-kindness Meditation
Q: I just want to ask, since we did the loving kindness meditation today, in order for it to be effective for us, how often would you suggest we do it and what time of day or anything like that to help make it be more effective?
Do breathing mindfulness and loving kindness meditation, build up to two or three sessions per day for 30 minutes total, with loving kindness ideally done at least once a day, preferably in the morning to set a positive tone for the day, and then you can adapt based on your needs; real transformation comes from consistently applying the intention, speech, and actions of kindness in daily life, not just the meditation itself.
Ep. 984 - (Group Learning Program) - Chapter 6 - The Middle Way: Walking the Middle Way
Q: Is there any situation where you can't walk in the middle?
Yes, certain substances like alcohol disrupt mindfulness and make it impossible to stay in the middle; the guidance is to avoid such substances to maintain the enlightened mental state.
Ep. 980 - (Pali Canon Study Group) - Foundation in The Teachings - Volume 3 - (Chapter 1-10)
Q: What is the purpose of generosity in practice according to this discourse?
Generosity serves to purify the mind by eliminating craving, while also supporting the community and making teachings accessible to others.
