Offers Excellent insights on the current state of youth baseball today. If you try to follow his recommendations locally, there will be doubt and pushback. Don’t ask anyone with any authority. Step up and set it up for yourself. Kids need this and parents need to wake up. Develop your kids in a fun way. Quit thinking just playing games does much of anything for them.
Thank you Dave!
Love this podcast! Only wish he had them more often!
This podcast has made my practices much more effective and fun for myself and my players. My favorite drills are the Fungo drill and the High Tempo Scrimmage. It’s kind of sad to see the kids on the other teams at the facility watching our high tempo practice longingly while they spend most of their time standing lines. Thanks Coach Dave!
The philosophy of this podcast is pretty solid. My only issue is with the idea from the Matheny Manifesto that parents and players to be “silent” on the sidelines. In my opinion it’s old school mentality like this that is keeping the game of baseball from progressing to new heights. As long as the people on the sidelines encourage with positivity, I don’t care how loud they get. It makes it more fun for everyone. Also don’t really understand how a lefty thrower at an infield position is “danger... more
Coach Dave, I’m a former college basketball player and varsity football coach that finds myself coaching my son's 10u team. I've coached these kids (all classmates at the Christian school I work at) since they were 4 in every sport, but after coach pitch, I've tried to find other, more knowledgeable baseball coaches for them. Well, all the dads who have time and competency to coach have moved their kids to travel teams for the coming year, leaving me with 11 rec level kids and a couple of part t... more

Coaching Youth Baseball emphasizes practical, development-first coaching for youth players, with frequent focus on increasing on-field reps, structured practice formats, and mentoring for coaches and parents. Episodes push away from win-at-all-costs culture and toward long-term skill development, player happiness, and safer, more enjoyable practice environments. Notable throughlines include three-team scrimmages, eight-on-eight tempo formats, and a consistent push for educator-style coaching, positive reinforcement, and better parent involvement. The approach is distinctive for blending personal experience from a long baseball career with ready-to-implement drills, checklists, and scalable training paths for volunteer and new coaches.
