在彼得的頭一封書信中，在二章二十五節他說到基督是我們魂的牧人和監督，而我們的魂乃是我們內裏的所是，也就是我們的真人位。在五章一至二節他告訴長老們，務要按著神牧養神的群羊。按著神，意思就是我們必須活神；我們必須隨時隨處有神。我們在我們的悟性上、道理上、與教訓上有神，但我們在牧養人時可能沒有活神。當我們與神是一，我們就成了神。在我們牧養別人時，我們就有神並且就是神。按著神牧養，意思就是按著神屬性的所是牧養。神是愛、光、聖、義。…我們必須按著這四種屬性牧養年幼的、軟弱的和退後的。這樣，我們就... more

牧養是行得通的。我們不該想要作講道大漢，為自己立名。人可能受吸引來聽我們，但事後誰來照顧他們？佈道大會的路行不通，…福音大會可能有許多人，最終卻沒有多少人加給召會。我們也不該用知名人士在我們聚會中作見證。這不會拯救人，把人加給召會。…要有效的拯救人，路必須是藉著小的活力排；在其中每一個人都必須是牧人。這樣過了短時間，召會就會復興。沒有別的路比這牧養的路更有效能。（李常受文集一九九四至一九九七年第四冊，五八○至五八一頁。）

約翰福音不僅告訴我們，主是生命，（十一25，十四6，）也告訴我們，主是好牧人，祂來了，是要叫我們得生命，並且得的更豐盛。（十10～11。）…約翰福音並且告訴我們，祂這好牧人要捨命，把猶太和外邦兩方面的信徒都合成一群，歸祂這一個牧人牧養。（十14～16。）
祂是牧長，（彼前二五4，）也是神群羊的大牧人，（來十三20，）要以祂作神羔羊的身分牧養我們，一直到永遠，領我們到生命水的泉，使我們永遠滿足，不渴又不飢。（啟七16～17。）祂這樣作，是完成神生機拯救的一大部分。

最重要的，我們必須學習供應生命給別人。要這樣作，我們自己必須有生命。…因此，我們必須學習生命的功課，然後纔會知道如何供應別人。事實上，我們若有生命，無須刻意供應生命給人，生命就已經供應給人了。
我們不該想要給人錯誤的印象，認為我們有作事的方法，我們很聰明，或者我們甚麼都知道；反而，我們該簡單的幫助人信靠主，凡事倚靠祂。為此，我們該帶著禱告的靈和氣氛，幫助別人進入禱告的生活。我們需要製造一種氣氛，使人無論遭遇甚麼，都會禱告，仰望主，並且為著祂的同在和清楚的引導而依賴祂。
