  • Grandma approved

Although my kids are raised, we are now navigating life as grandparents to 10 with two of them being adopted at age of seven and four from the foster care system. Dr. Kathy offers excellent insight into all things related to raising kids in today’s crazy culture. As a former high school teacher, I really appreciate all the knowledge she brings in an easy to understand way.

  • Entitlement

I have listened to a lot of parenting podcasts, advice, therapists etc. I was really disappointed about this episode. The good things in it were what you shared about Dr Becky’s useful perspective. Your whole show was taking her perspective and critiquing it, versus bringing your own perspective to the table on how to counter entitlement. The fact that Dr Kathy is critiquing someone who he wasn’t familiar with and obviously didn’t understand how she suggests implementing her ideas, is poor taste... more

Listening to Our Kids: Bridging the Gap Between Generations - ReAir
Q: How can parents practically listen better to kids who may not participate or talk much?
Start by listening to understand, ask open-ended questions, acknowledge what isn't said, and create regular, low-pressure opportunities for connection like shared activities or conversations during walks or meals.
Listening to Our Kids: Bridging the Gap Between Generations - ReAir
Q: What should our posture be to this movement of youth speaking out and seeking recognition?
A balanced posture that honors their voice while guiding them with truth, focusing on belonging, purpose, and the ability to lead with adults rather than feeling victimized.
The Belonging Built Through Conversation
Q: What two or three things would you tell parents if they're going to teach their kids conversation skills or how to have a conversation?
Start with encouraging vulnerability at the dinner table, model follow-up questions, and practice phrases that invite more detail, like 'tell me more' and 'I want to understand you.' Also choose environments where kids can share their whole story, while balancing siblings' needs.
Beyond Dry Texting: Cultivating Meaningful Conversations with Our Kids - ReAir
Q: Is it okay for kids to dry text sometimes, and when should we push back with follow-up questions?
Dry texting can be acceptable for quick confirmations, but we should teach follow-up questions to deepen the conversation and honor the other person's time and feelings.
Character Age vs. Chronological Age: Rites of Passage in Ages and Stages - ReAir
Q: Are there certain rites of passage that you would say are natural ones that we as parents should highlight or celebrate?
Dr. Kathy suggests identifying key transitions—like moving from a toddler Bible to a study Bible, or a child staying home alone—to intentionally celebrate growth, and to align these rites with a child's character and emotional readiness rather than simply their age.
