This podcast about Naval affairs is excellent. Both cohosts (Chris Cavas and Chris Servello) have substantial experience and credentials in the Navy world and provide timely information of what is happening in the Navy.

  • Good guests, terrible interviews

I enjoy the weekly maritime updates and the interesting guests they get most of the time, although the show has a habit of bringing on industry executives to wax poetic about their shipyards or weapons systems when anyone who’s followed the industry for awhile knows that shipyards and the Navy are making a huge mess out of nearly every project they undertake. But for me, the worst part of these interviews is the way the host Chris Cavas asks questions. He doesn’t ask questions so much as he ramb... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

CAVASSHIPS Podcast [Apr 21, ’25] Sea, Air and Space Day Three…Interview w/ Saildrone's John Mustin
Q: Who's your resource sponsor for the Saildrone Spectre program?
There isn't a formal program-of-record sponsor; Saildrone engages directly with Opnav Orbit and the various Navy directorates (N9, N95/96/97) and coordinates with them to align payloads and concepts with fleet needs.
CAVASSHIPS Podcast [May 22, ’26] Ep: 243 Retired Admiral Bill Moran on Maintaining, Modernizing & Growing A Navy in Demand
Q: What are the four big challenges the Navy must manage right now, and how do you balance them?
The four challenges are maintenance, modernization, growth, and taking care of the people. The aim is to pursue all four simultaneously and avoid fixing one at the expense of the others, recognizing that a larger fleet must still be ready and sustainable. Budgeting in a favorable but not limitless environment requires disciplined, holistic leadership and a credible plan to deliver a capable force.
CAVASSHIPS Podcast [Apr 21, ’25] Sea, Air and Space Day Two…Interview w/ Black Sea's Bob Pudney
Q: What can the Navy do better to help you help them in the near term?
Fleets should drive requirements more directly via the acquisition arm, improving predictability and speed; ongoing open collaboration, faster feedback loops, and consistent funding support through the maritime industrial base enable rapid fielding and more effective support for sailors.
CAVASSHIPS Podcast [Apr 21, ’25] Sea, Air and Space Day Two…Interview w/ Black Sea's Bob Pudney
Q: Tell us a little bit about the GARC for those that aren't familiar.
The GARC is the Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, a 16-foot aluminum-hulled unmanned surface vessel designed as a versatile truck to carry payloads; the company is expanding to a Block 2 (the Chaser) with greater range and payload to serve fleet commanders who want different payload configurations, and hundreds of GARCs are already deployed across fleets.
CAVASSHIPS Podcast [Apr 20, ’25] Sea, Air and Space Day One…Interview w/ Leidos Defense's Eric Krogh
Q: How is the Navy's move toward autonomy affecting Leidos' strategy and partnerships?
They are pursuing open modular architectures, executive integration with Navy C2, and ongoing investments in MUSV opportunities, with emphasis on collaboration and partnerships to deliver scalable, low-cost autonomous capabilities.
