Sorry, very interesting topic but the background noise, telephonic rings, scratchy microphones just ruined listening to it.

  • Deterrence

Taiwan/ROC does not/ cannot reconquer the mainland/PRC. The US ought to sign a new treaty with Taiwan/ROC & be very specific that the US will come to the aid of Taiwan/ROC.

The US expects its allies: Japan, South Korea, Australia & NATO, to come to our aid when the PRC attacks US territory/military.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP. 489: An Alliance Forged at Scapa Flow
Q: What sources were you able to uncover and use for your research to get these firsthand accounts?
The work grew out of my broader project documenting the US Navy in World War I, using archives from the Naval History and Heritage Command and the National Archives' record groups, especially material in record group 45, to build a documentary history that informed the article and its endnotes.
EP. 489: An Alliance Forged at Scapa Flow
Q: So when you were deciding to write about World War I, what drew you in to this particular story?
I was drawn to the break with past naval thinking, the shift in how the US approached alliance, and the collaborative dynamic between American and British forces as they confronted unprecedented naval challenges. The central question was how the US transitioned from an isolated posture to operating alongside and under an ally, and what structural and personal factors enabled that transition.
EP. 490: A WAVES Officer’s Mission to Preserve Naval Memory
Q: What happened to the Edsol and how do archives help uncover those events?
The Edsol was lost in 1942 after a battle in the Indian Ocean; archival records like deck logs, war diaries, and action reports, plus later identification of the wreck, helped piece together the ship's final days and the fate of its crew.
EP. 490: A WAVES Officer’s Mission to Preserve Naval Memory
Q: How did Gilmore's background and family influence her dedication to archives?
Her upbringing near the Naval Academy in Annapolis, her brother's service and loss on the Edsol, and the women-dominated culture of the WAVES and NHHC all shaped her fierce commitment to preserving records as a living memorial.
EP. 490: A WAVES Officer’s Mission to Preserve Naval Memory
Q: Could you tell us a bit more about the changes Ensign Gilmore made to help preserve naval memory?
Gilmore helped implement a system that organized records first by Navy command hierarchy, then alphabetically and chronologically, a methodizing approach that made the archives usable at scale and remains in use today.
