  • I lived in China

2016-21 I lived in China and several of my Chinese colleagues were married to PLA staff officers and they mentioned casually that it’s inevitable that they’ll hit Taiwan and possibly by 2027.

  • 5min ideas embellished to make 45min podcasts

This podcast has been a good source of information and ideas concerning irregular warfare, but the last several guests have offered very little concrete practical recommendations and instead fall back on purely academic or theoretical scripts. It’s frustrating because you get 3/4 through a podcast and realize you could have gotten the same points from skimming an article in 5min versus wasting 45min. This is especially evident in the latest episode “plausible deniability and proxies”. Disappoint... more

  • Ugh.

There is a lack of coverage on the subject and this show helps fill that gap. Unfortunately, the hosts’ aren’t great speakers and their equipment makes it difficult to listen for a whole podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Iran, Revolution, and the Logic of Proxy Warfare
Q: Why did Iran come to rely on proxies in the first place, and how did this strategy evolve over time?
Iran adopted proxy networks as a toolbox after losing access to conventional arms following the revolution, using local militias and non-state actors to extend influence, counter opponents, and manage regional conflicts, evolving from local aims to broader regional objectives over time.
Iran, Revolution, and the Logic of Proxy Warfare
Q: Behnam, could you describe the political context in Iran that led to the 1979 revolution and how earlier events shaped that moment?
The interviewees discuss how the 1953 coup and a long history of dynastic rule created a legitimacy crisis and deep suspicion toward Western involvement, ultimately contributing to a social coalition that toppled the monarchy and established the Islamic Republic, with different factions united by anti-American and anti-imperial sentiments despite varying ideologies.
The Strategic Logic of Large Militant Alliance Networks
Q: What policy implications arise from understanding alliances as a diagnostic tool rather than solely as a kinetic threat?
It implies that non-kinetic tools, such as exploiting ideological tensions within alliances or strengthening partner forces, can disrupt militant networks more cheaply and with less risk than large-scale military campaigns, while still preserving strategic resources for high-priority threats.
The Strategic Logic of Large Militant Alliance Networks
Q: How does the comparative-advantage framework help explain why these groups pursued alliances with partners who were stronger or ideologically aligned but not always equally powerful?
The framework suggests that groups trade surplus in ideological credibility or operational capacity to cover deficits, allowing them to extend their reach or legitimacy; thus, alliances can be formed to compensate for weaknesses or to amplify strengths in different domains.
The Future of War Part III: Strategic Sabotage in an Era of Great-Power
Q: August, why did you choose sabotage and non-traditional capabilities for your narrative?
This approach highlights the importance of local partnerships and the effectiveness of non-kinetic operations, which may be more impactful than traditional combat skills.
