  • I lived in China

2016-21 I lived in China and several of my Chinese colleagues were married to PLA staff officers and they mentioned casually that it’s inevitable that they’ll hit Taiwan and possibly by 2027.

  • 5min ideas embellished to make 45min podcasts

This podcast has been a good source of information and ideas concerning irregular warfare, but the last several guests have offered very little concrete practical recommendations and instead fall back on purely academic or theoretical scripts. It’s frustrating because you get 3/4 through a podcast and realize you could have gotten the same points from skimming an article in 5min versus wasting 45min. This is especially evident in the latest episode “plausible deniability and proxies”. Disappoint... more

  • Ugh.

There is a lack of coverage on the subject and this show helps fill that gap. Unfortunately, the hosts’ aren’t great speakers and their equipment makes it difficult to listen for a whole podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Winning Without Fighting: Strategic Culture and Gray Zone Competition (Part 1)
Q: TX, what should success look like for the United States at the strategic rather than tactical level?
Success involves making hard choices, investing in overall resilience, supporting strategic partners, and focusing on quality rather than quantity of military hardware to adapt to the complexities of modern irregular warfare.
Winning Without Fighting: Strategic Culture and Gray Zone Competition (Part 1)
Q: Sue, could you unpack how American strategic culture inhibits our ability to compete in the gray zone?
American strategic culture is hindered by a binary view of war, belief that problems can be solved with technology, and an insistence on military-oriented definitions of conflict, which puts them at a disadvantage against competitors who play below the threshold of conventional warfare.
Winning Without Fighting: Strategic Culture and Gray Zone Competition (Part 1)
Q: TX, from your operational experiences, what signs show an insurgency is shifting from the local problem to a strategic game changer?
It's about location and the significance of particular countries. For example, a conflict involving a major country, like Iran or China, becomes game-changing based on their resources and strategic importance.
Winning Without Fighting: Strategic Culture and Gray Zone Competition (Part 1)
Q: Sue, what motivated you and your co-authors to write Winning Without Fighting?
The motivation stemmed from noticing a strategic gap in understanding irregular warfare, recognizing that different academic backgrounds offered a fragmented perspective on the subject, and the desire to create a holistic view on how different countries conceptualize irregular warfare and its implications for grand strategy.
