  • Important conversations

As an outsider to the international relations and global ethics communities(Bartender by night, mathematician/physicist by day) this is an incredible source for staying informed and understanding how nations, states, parties and individual actors are shaping the world. Obviously this podcast is not all encompassing, and it shouldn’t be, but is does have broad reach and myriad guests discussing important issues that affect many different populations.

  • Guests are great, you need a new interviewer

The experts interviewed are so interesting. Alex is not a talented interviewer. If he’s selecting the experts he’s doing a wonderful job, but he’s not great at conducting interviews and brings down the quality of the conversation.

  • “...Marginalized...” “Not a Participant...”

RE: mention of a Japanese man who took photos of the 1919 riots in Chicago. He’s still being marginalized because his name is not even mentioned, except as a “Japanese man.”

One star for the irony of talking about him as being marginalized at the time, while still being marginalized today in this podcast.

His name should be in the notes, as well as being mentioned in the podcast.

Practicing Strategic Empathy and Navigating Competing Values
Q: What did you want to achieve with Moral Debt, and how does it illuminate a future geopolitical system that's more equitable or responsive?
The author explains the book as a framework for reparative justice, arguing that injustices create moral debts that can be inherited or transferred, and that collective responsibility is essential. He emphasizes the distinction between reparations and reparative justice and argues for mechanisms that acknowledge history without necessarily prescribing blanket redistribution, while highlighting the need to channel care effectively and to remember histories as a moral imperative.
Building Moral and Professional Resilience
Q: How have the threats to humanitarian workers evolved over the last six years, and what does that mean for safety strategies?
Threats have shifted from non-state actors to state or state-sponsored groups, demanding renewed focus on political dynamics, accountability, and rapid, smart risk-taking to enable operations while protecting staff.
The Ethics of AI Agents in Global Governance
Q: Could AI be used to draft political speeches and decisions in a way that erodes democratic accountability, and what can multilateral organizations do to mitigate this risk?
There are real risks of misinformation and audience manipulation when AI drafts political content; mitigation includes disclosure, human oversight, transparent frameworks, and external audits to ensure ethical use and prevent bias from shaping public discourse.
The Ethics of Decision-Making in National Security, with Avril D. Haines
Q: How do we incentivize the right people to go into public service when the financial rewards and prestige are declining?
Despite public perceptions, talented individuals continue to enter public service, often driven by a commitment to improve the system, highlighting the need for honest conversations about ethical principles to restore trust.
The Ethics of Decision-Making in National Security, with Avril D. Haines
Q: What are your thoughts on the tension between ethical culture and democratic tendencies within the civil service?
There can be tension, especially when bureaucratic processes slow down political responses, requiring a careful balance to ensure effectiveness without sacrificing ethical standards.
