  • Important conversations

As an outsider to the international relations and global ethics communities(Bartender by night, mathematician/physicist by day) this is an incredible source for staying informed and understanding how nations, states, parties and individual actors are shaping the world. Obviously this podcast is not all encompassing, and it shouldn’t be, but is does have broad reach and myriad guests discussing important issues that affect many different populations.

  • Guests are great, you need a new interviewer

The experts interviewed are so interesting. Alex is not a talented interviewer. If he’s selecting the experts he’s doing a wonderful job, but he’s not great at conducting interviews and brings down the quality of the conversation.

  • “...Marginalized...” “Not a Participant...”

RE: mention of a Japanese man who took photos of the 1919 riots in Chicago. He’s still being marginalized because his name is not even mentioned, except as a “Japanese man.”

One star for the irony of talking about him as being marginalized at the time, while still being marginalized today in this podcast.

His name should be in the notes, as well as being mentioned in the podcast.

The Cost of Military Primacy, with Peter Harris
Q: How does the military budget influence U.S. foreign policy?
Harris argues that the military budget has become a means to drive various domestic policy goals, which distorts foreign policy decisions, leading to spending that should not be tied to military expenditure.
The Cost of Military Primacy, with Peter Harris
Q: What is retrenchment, and what does it mean for U.S. military policy?
Retrenchment refers specifically to a policy of reducing military forward deployments and engagements, which Harris argues has become politically impossible despite the original reasons for such deployments having evaporated.
The Ethical Abyss: A Tech Ecosystem Reliant on Conflict, with Professor Elke Schwarz
Q: How do you react to the framing of ethical individual versus moral individual?
Schwarz emphasizes the importance of reflexivity as a cornerstone of moral responsibility, suggesting that the distinction between being moral or ethical is less clear-cut and often interconnected.
The State of Migration in 2025: Balancing Values and Interests at the International and Local Levels
Q: Why do you think that nativist anti-immigrant message has been able to find political success?
It stems from a lack of curiosity in communities that leads them to grab onto headlines instead of understanding the complexities of migration issues.
Advancing Global Health in a Moment of Fracturing Partnerships
Q: Do you think we are prepared to face another global pandemic like COVID-19?
Unfortunately, we're not well prepared for dealing with another COVID-19 type pandemic, and we may even be less prepared than we were a year or two ago.
