大家對他最耳熟能詳的故事，是他自願去服中華民國的第一屆外交替代役，到了我們的前邦交國：布吉納法索去當兵。
他在當地做了許多善事，像是發起垃圾換舊衣的活動，還蓋了一間孤兒院。他把這段故事寫成暢銷書《愛呆西非連加恩》，後來還被拍成《45度C天空下》這齣電視劇。
