Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matthew Hope and Movies That Changed Your Life: Rocky, JFK & Commando
Q: And finally, Commando—what drew you to it and what did it teach you about action cinema and audience engagement?
Commando spoke to a primal love of kinetic, unambiguous storytelling. Its emphasis on relentless sequence after sequence, the spectacle, and the sheer invention of weaponized bravado showed me how to tap into a pure, crowd-pleasing energy that still feels exciting when viewed through a nostalgic lens.
Matthew Hope and Movies That Changed Your Life: Rocky, JFK & Commando
Q: Moving to JFK, what impact did Oliver Stone's film have on you as a viewer and thinker, especially regarding conspiracy narratives and public memory?
The film demonstrated how cinema can condense a vast amount of information into an engaging narrative that still invites critical thinking. It also highlighted how movies can catalyze public interest and policy action, like prompting discussions and archival interest that linger long after the credits roll.
Matthew Hope and Movies That Changed Your Life: Rocky, JFK & Commando
Q: Okay, clock's ticking. 1976's Rocky, directed by John Avildsen, what makes it such an important film for you in terms of memories and impact?
Rocky is the archetype of turning an underdog story into a universal hopeful narrative. It showed me that with resourcefulness and persistence you can craft something enduring, and it laid the foundation for how I value craft, storytelling under constraint, and the emotional resonance of simple human drive.
Simon Poulter & Sophie Mellor and Movies That Changed Your Life: Gleaners & I, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Eraserhead
Q: Why make a film about Mark Fisher?
To carry on the thinking and to create a film that acts as a deliberate detournement and political action, using emergent, collaborative methods rather than conventional documentary approaches.
Karla Williams - No longer waiting - how I'm pivoting my writing career - and Pose, Django Unchained, The Morning Show
Q: What makes 'The Morning Show' special for you as a writer?
It explores important themes around sexual misconduct in media, showcasing differing perspectives and holds characters accountable for their actions.
