  • Great authors

I would have given this podcast series five stars because I love hearing the authors speak about their lives and their books, but my review lost a star because Carol puts too much of herself into her “interviews.” Sometimes, instead of asking a question, she tells the author about his/her own book. Other times, Carol’s lead up to a question is so long, I imagine the author rolling his/her eyes—as I am—and hoping she gets to the point. Still other times, she relates anecdotes from her own life th... more

I look forward to learning what inspired the authors and hearing stories behind the books. I also enjoy the audiobook excerpt that sometimes follows the interview. Keep up the good work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"Bookaccino Live" Book Group: Patrick Ryan
Q: What inspired the setting in Ohio and the town of Bonamie?
The setting grew from personal connections to Northwest Ohio, the town layout, and the idea of a place that could feel authentic without being an actual town; I wanted a familiar-feeling backdrop that could embody the era.
"Bookaccino Live" Book Group: Patrick Ryan
Q: How do you approach the balance between character development and plot in Buckeye?
I start with a loose emotional landing for each character and let the plot emerge from their needs and relationships; the discovery comes through writing rather than planning every beat in advance.
"Bookaccino Live" Book Group: Lily King
Q: Did you do research for medical aspects of the son's illness?
Yes, she did targeted medical research through conversations with a doctor friend and online sources to keep details authentic but integrated organically into the narrative.
"Bookaccino Live" Book Group: Lily King
Q: What were the challenges in pacing the story across three time periods?
Pacing required many drafts and careful cuts; the author tends to cut too little at first, then iteratively tightens transitions and uses reader perspective to gauge tempo, ensuring transitions feel exciting rather than draggy.
"Bookaccino Live" Book Group: Clare Leslie Hall
Q: Why did Beth get pregnant again in the narrative?
It was always the redemptive ending, providing a new life that mirrors forgiveness and a chance for the couple to rebuild after tragedy.
