I love the conversations with Carol Fitzgerald at Bookreporter. Truly insightful, excellent and always my go-to to learn more about a book and author. Five stars!

  • Great authors

I would have given this podcast series five stars because I love hearing the authors speak about their lives and their books, but my review lost a star because Carol puts too much of herself into her “interviews.” Sometimes, instead of asking a question, she tells the author about his/her own book. Other times, Carol’s lead up to a question is so long, I imagine the author rolling his/her eyes—as I am—and hoping she gets to the point. Still other times, she relates anecdotes from her own life th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Francesca Serritella: Full Bloom
Q: How did you approach the concept of aging and power in your book?
I wanted to challenge the idea that power and value peak at youth, showing Iris's growth as she navigates love, career, and motherhood fears, and how she learns to claim what she deserves at any age.
Francesca Serritella: Full Bloom
Q: What inspired you to use fragrance as the conduit for Iris's transformation?
I've always loved scent as a storytelling tool because it can evoke memory and emotion without needing explicit description, and Grasse research further showed me how scent maps to the brain's memory and mood centers, making fragrance a powerful catalyst for Iris's self-discovery.
Virginia Evans: The Correspondent
Q: Why did you choose an epistolary format for The Correspondent?
I wanted the structure to feel like a real collection of voices; letters let different perspectives surface organically and let the reader piece together the full life of Sybil.
Devi S. Laskar: Midnight, At The War
Q: How did your own experiences influence the protagonist and the book's emotional arc?
The novel draws on the author's background as a journalist and on personal trauma, using those threads to shape the character's reactions, relationships, and sense of guilt. Two of her own stories and childhood memories become touchpoints for Rita's trauma and resilience, creating a believable throughline for her personal and professional challenges.
Devi S. Laskar: Midnight, At The War
Q: Why did you choose Midnight, At The War as the title, and how does it frame the book's exploration of journalism?
The title was a constant through the planning and writing; it signals a tense, liminal space where truth, timing, and conflict collide. It also suggests that the war is not just a distant event but something that affects personal lives and the way stories are told, framed through the journalist's perspective.
